• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Church Noticeboard

I've been asked whether I can make a new external noticeboard for a local church. I think it could be a fun project. I've been asked for a 'quote'. I've already said I won't charge for my time. That's partly because I'm happy to donate my time but also because I'm going to be very clear that...

    Possible New Project - Trophy

As some of you might know, one of my other hobbies is target rifle shooting. It's a very old sport with the first "Sovereign's Prize" being competed for in 1860 when the event was held on Wimbledon Common (the same year that the Open Championship began). I represent Guernsey and recently...

    Mother of pearl

Malc's tooth fairy box thread reminded me that my wife picked up this abalone shell when we were in Guernsey last week. Abalone are called ormers in Guernsey which is the northernmost limit of their territory. They're something of a local delicacy and collecting them is strictly restricted to...

    Outside door frame - finished

In 2019, I made this door for a wall in our garden. This was actually the first proper woodworking project I did. Unfortunately the frame (which was on its last legs when I made the door) has now failed and I need to make a new one. I'll try to do a short WIP for this in due course, but the...

    Curtain rail - fixing issues

One of my pet hates is putting up curtain rails. I've got one which keeps jumping off the wall! It has 3 brackets (at each end and one in the middle). Each bracket has a single screw. The wall is brick and, in my view, not very well made. There seem to be voids and weak spots. My most recent...

    A little bit twisted

I took a photo of this table in a bar when we were on holiday before Christmas. It was so twisted that I'm surprised the glasses didn't slide off! (PS this was in the French Alps not Svalbard - the bar has a bear theme which explains the polar bear poster.)

    Woodwork of sorts

Storm Darragh brought down a field maple (which in turn took a large bough off a cheery tree) in our garden before Christmas, so my job between Christmas and New Year was to clear it up and produce some firewood. I did find a few nuggets like this which made me wish the tree was much bigger and...

    Chairs - Done!

As I've mentioned in a few other posts over the last few weeks/months, 2025's big job for me is to make half a dozen chairs to go with the table I finished in the Autumn. I'm currently at the design phase and thought I'd share where I've got to. The first decision is that I want to do a...

    Chair repair

I've been asked to have a go at fixing this broken chair: It's a classic short grain break. Any thoughts on how to tackle it? I fear someone has tried to repair it before and it has failed. The gap doesn't close up brilliantly and I wonder if that's because there is dried glue in there. I...

    Scribing joints

I'm talking about scribing joints in furniture (e.g. chairs) rather than scribing, for example, kitchen worktops/cabinets to walls. Does anyone know of any resources describing the techniques for doing this? Joyce touches on it but doesn't go into detail. I can, for instance, see how it could...

Festool domino df 500 alignment question

This sort of issue has been covered before, but I think I have a new question. When I use the line in the acrylic "window", the side-to-side alignment is slightly out (a little more than the thickness of a pencil line). I've tried adjusting the acrylic window, but mine seems to "self centre"...

    A pair of mirrors

My wife asked me to make a pair of large mirrors. She bought two IKEA mirrors as she reckoned they were cheaper than buying mirror glass (I'll have to take her word for that). This is the IKEA version: I did some dimensions/cutting list: Each side of the frame was to be made up of three...

Books on chair design and construction

Are there any "bibles" on chair design and construction methods which I should be reading before I embark on making chairs to go with the table I just built? Thanks

    Walnut Tree

I planted one yesterday (along with a paper handkerchief tree and a metasequoia). When I'm in charge, I'll make it a law that everyone has to plant one...

    Kitchen Table - Finished!

This is a project I've been thinking about for a little while. I spent some time before Christmas working on the design and doing some experimentation but I haven't done much this month due to a shoulder injury and a bout of shingles (not recommended...). However, I'm getting back into it now...

Small restoration project - advice sought

My wife goes to upholstery classes and her current project is a rather nice chair which she inherited from an elderly aunt. It was very tatty when we got it. She is making good progress with the upholstery, but there are a couple of issues she has asked my to look at. One is a small water...

    Surfboard Build

After this first post, I'm afraid there may not be many on this topic for a while - e.g. a couple of years or so... In our garden, we have (had) a very large paulownia tree. It was planted by a previous owner of the house about 30 odd years ago and is (was) a fairly spectacular tree - very...

"Lever" for a Stanley 9 1/2 block plane

Does anyone have any spare parts for a Stanley 9 1/2 block plane. Specifically, I'm looking for the lever which tightens the cap: I restored one of these planes for my dad. He loves it but unfortunately dropped it, breaking the lever. If anyone has a spare which they'd be willing to sell...

    Edward Barnsley Workshop

I haven't been posting on here much recently, but have still been woodworking. I've actually been doing a pupillage at Edward Barnsley for the past couple of months or so, which has been great fun and extremely educational. I've been woodworking for around 3 years now. I'm entirely self...

    Machine Restoration (Wallace, look away!)

I think I may have posted something about this on "the other" forum a couple of years ago, and I've finally got round to doing it. My parents in-law had a small line marker (for tennis courts and that sort of thing) but it was the victim of a fire at their house and ended up looking a bit sorry...
