• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Slightly off topic - Abrafiles

Andy's thread on the Shetack saw reminded me: i was going through my late father's stuff last week and came across a bundle of Abrafiles. Whoopee!!! They are staggeringly useful if you want to cut complex shapes in all manner of sheet metal. They also are superb for doing diecast metal boxes...

    Thirty years old!

I've just been setting up a new PC. It's running Linux Mint, and since it has a flashy new graphics card, etc, I thought I'd see how some vintage games looked. So I pulled out my box of Quake software, including several home-made CDs. All of them read perfectly, including one Dysan (blue...

    Colonial Williamsburg?

Has anybody been, and If so, what did you think? Any particular favourite and not-so-good things to do? Obviously two of my woodworking heroes, St. Roy and Peter Follansbee, used to work there, but I shall be accompanied by a definitely non-woodworker, but there's weaving, lacemaking, etc. so...

Free to a good home: phenolic router plate

As subject. I'd forgotten I had this, and I'm not sure how I originally acquired it - I think it was kindly passed on to me from someone else. Anyway it's used but perfectly functional, and drilled for DeWalt 625A, Trend T11 and T12, and other similar models (there are a few!). I don't have the...

Sapele front door threshold: really tough clear finish?

At least, I think it's Sapele - Mahogany colour, with obvious salt crystals (they catch the light in the workshop), but not as dense and tough as Teak. It seems much easier to work than Teak, too. It needs some protection from muddy walking boots, etc., and it's far too pretty for paint. I can...

Paint stripper for Terrazzo - any suggestions?

Back in the day, old fashioned paint stripper worked really well on marble. I restored several fireplaces using it (n.b. wooden scrapers only, no metal. DAMHIKT!). I now have a small but obvious piece of Terrazzo to clean up (our front step), which I'd like to make nice before the front door's...

Kity 439 snipe fixed! Now with pictures. (probably similar planers, too)

My 439 is old and ought to be worn out. It has some annoyances, such as steamrolling chips into the top surface when thicknessing, and, until recently, really horrid snipe on the thicknesser. But it still keeps going heroically. The snipe was worse with short stock, which is extra annoying, as...

    Evri possible means?

I am exasperated. I have an electronics repair job to do for my wife's church, some LED 'stage' lights. There are seven altogether, all faulty in slightly different ways, so I decided to batch them and do them all at once (all but one have power supply issues - the other has additional faults)...

    Upcut & Downcut Spiral Cutters - woo-hoo!

I've had one of each (1/4") sitting unused for ages, but yesterday had the first chance to try one out - the downcut one (i.e. pushing the chips back into the work). How did I ever get by without them? Just, "wow!". Only one drawback: I'm using a collet extension, and a 1/2" to 1/4" reducer...

    Heated gloves for the workshop?

I've been offered a pair of heated gloves as a birthday present choice. This is because I lose all feeling in fingertips after around ten minutes, which is really annoying. So the questions are: 1: do such things, suitable as work gloves, actually exist? 2: What might be the good brands to look...

    Motor-run capacitors... bookmark this?

In case someone has an oddly-behaving induction motor*, this might be helpful. Basically, look at the existing cap, note its physical dimensions and its capacitance value, usually measured in uF (microfarads), and see if there's a matching one. It's not a panacea but a failing cap will give...

Amazon: "I think it says 'Rolex' underneath, Del..."

This was the image from an advert for a very common optocoupler: It was designed originally by Sharp, (and is now widely copied). Sigh. E. PS: I was sorely tempted to photoshop-out the second "R"...

Crafty use of Google maps' satellite imagery?

I had a sales call on the landline yesterday. They're usually only sales calls, outright scammers, or relatives that can't remember our mobile numbers. Probably fewer than one call a week is genuine. Yesterday's was surprising: from a solar system company, asking if I'd had my attic inverter...

    Musclechuck - anti-rust advice requested...

Thanks to Mr. Maskery's move abroad a few years ago (well, huge thanks to Mr. M himself actually), I'm the happy owner of an Incra router table and positioner. IT took me ages to get around to setting it up, but I did so over Christmas 2023, and I'm extremely glad I did. I've fitted my Trend...

    Boring Teak!

Around 17 years ago, I scored a big assortment of hardwood offcuts, from a local furniture restorer who was retiring. I filled my long wheelbase Landrover (having removed the middle row seats!), and it was well down on the springs once I'd loaded it. He wouldn't take much money for it -...

Tool and other battery fires, etc.

[The thread about Steve's camera battery prompted this. I know there are chemists on here, and I welcome inputs] Mona Lott, the laundress, was a regular character in Tommy Handley's war-era It's That Man Again (ITMA) radio show. Mona, of course, had a catchphrase, "It's being so cheerful as...
