• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Tiny fanlight-style catches

Does anyone know where I could find tiny fanlight-style catches (that is, small surface-mount spring latches)? I’m looking for something low profile, projecting no more than 10 mm from the surface, and no more than 20 x 20 mm I’m actually interested in hearing about any kind of low profile...

    Bird Dawn 03:50

Someone should tell the birds that sunrise is not until 04:46 today. Think it’s mainly wrens singing.

    Wedged M&Ts

A quick survey about your use of wedged through M&Ts please: 1. Do you angle the mortice all the way to both edges or do you stop short leaving a 90° part to the mortise? 2. Do you cut the kerfs in the tenon roughly parallel to the sides of the tenon or do you angle the cuts? 3. Do you drill...

    Mortice & Tenon Calculator

Does anyone use a mortice & tenon calculator spreadsheet/website/app for working out sizing & placement of your m&t joints? I’m likely to create my own specifically for wedged m&t in rebated material (because it helps me cement knowledge in my brain more than because it makes the calculations...

    Extra length on window components

If you’re making a casement window, it seems common to allow some extra length on the pieces so that you can trim them flush with the other sides after assembly. If you don’t do this and instead cut directly to final length, there’s a risk that minor inaccuracies will make the pieces too small...

    Custom Window Film

Has anyone had custom static cling window film printed? Any tips, recommended providers? I want to create some for windows in our shower room where the top half is mostly clear than transitions to a design in the lower half to obscure the view. We’re currently using purchased film with a stained...

    Tack Hammers

I haven’t used it very much yet, but I treated myself to a tack hammer. This one from Draper: https://www.drapertools.com/product/19724/draper-expert-magnetic-tack-hammer-190g-7oz/ I got it because of the feature where the hammer holds the tack or pin so you can get started without hitting...

Legards Furniture - English woodworker with a YouTube Channel

Early days on this channel, but looks like some interesting work. There’s some evidence of carving, turning, finishing, box making, chair making, axe making on the channel. Who knows what else he gets up to. Looks like it’s Shorts (vertical videos) only. Just 443 subs on YouTube. Probably...

    Letter Tidy

Apparently the flaps on the inside of letterboxes are called letter tidies in the UK. I did not know this until about 5 minutes ago. Anyway, the letter box for our house is in the back door and does not have a letter tidy. The interior of the external flap is visible and shows some wear which is...

    Brass Escutcheons

I have a vague idea that at some point in the next decade I might like to make a couple of brass escutcheons (for room doors) to echo a design from a fireplace. The design would be kind of a Nouveau style with a couple of raised dimples and swoopy edges - simplified for the escutcheon, so it...

L shaped hallway - oak floor

We were thinking of encaustic tile for the hallway, but now looking at oak floorboards like in the adjacent rooms for the L-shaped hallway. The side going from the front door into the house is aligned with long boards as in the rooms, so that’s no problem. But as the hall turns 90° to the left...

    Dogs’ understanding of time

For those that have dogs, how much indication do they give you that they understand time? We used to have an Australian Shepherd that would look at the clock on the microwave and know when it was time for my wife to come home. I didn’t teach him to do that. I noticed that he knew when it was...

    Stain sample pots?

I’d like to try out some wood staining (mainly on oak), but wondered if there’s a good place to get small quantities of stain from so I can compare colours. How do you get into this?

Festool Track Saw Dust Port Improvement

Festool have a single-battery tracksaw coming out soon, the TSC 55 KS. There are a couple of improvements on that model that may be applicable to other models if they make spare parts available. The notable one for me is the locking dust port. If you have a Festool saw, you know that the elbow...

    Columns between skirting and shower

There’s a gap between the skirting and shower enclosure that I have been tasked with beautifying (or at least covering). I’m creating mini columns from 2x2 about 8 inches tall. This means that they are wider than the gap and taller than the skirting and will still have enough meat left on once...

    Removing cat flap

I want to remove the cat flap from this door Any advice for adding a panel back to fill the hole without taking the door apart? I guess a panel flush to the sides held in by moulding (and/or fixings hidden by the moulding) should work?

New neighbour is going to remove attached garage & build extension close to property line. Bat, Wrens & the Martins’ Nest

The other day my wife left a window without a screen open past dusk and a bat flew in. Possibly it was the same one that had come inside a week earlier when I’d left the door open. On that occasion, the bat decided at one point to scuttle along the floor and I gently picked it up in a pillow...

    Wi-Fi Calling

City people probably don’t use this feature much, but Wi-Fi Calling (receiving standard phone calls & texts over the internet while disconnected from the mobile network) is pretty useful for us because we have zero mobile signal at the house. We’re on EE and wi-fi calling works for months at a...

    Router skates

I’m in the process of making router skates for levelling & thicknessing with my Makita router. This is the first attempt, but the Perspex is only 5 mm and it flexes too much. I have a 6 mm sheet that seems much stiffer, so I’m going to try that. This was mainly for practice in drilling the...
