I have no idea what I'm going to use a compass plane for, but I'm looking forward to coming up with some ideas!

I'm pretty sure that "compassed work" was a general term for anything with a curve. It would have applied to windows or doors with arched heads, for example. If you ever want to sell that Dr Al, I have a boat-building project on my horizon. A compass plane is an absolute necessity for that.
