• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Mine died (the electro magnet fielding) in my P/T, though with it being an obsolete Brook Crompton component, it was very tricky finding a (salvaged) replacement. Which was a straight forward swap out.

I could potentially pick up a spare, but was wondering how common a failure they are?

Contactors are pretty reliable devices unlike the lower power handling Chinese nvr fitted on hobby machines.
Biggest cause of problems is dust ingress to the stop/start buttons and next likely to fail are the coils. Usually by the time the contactor is old enough to suffer coil failure the design has changed and new replacement coils are like hens teeth. Exactly as you have found swapping for another used one is easy otherwise fitting a complete new contactor is the alternative with all the problems of differing mechanical features.
I would say it is not worth keeping a replacement coil in stock as by the time you need it you might not be able to find it! :D

Thanks Bob. You're right I can see a spare disappearing in the back of a drawer!

A whole replacement contactor is around £35 delivered from toolsatan. I've supplied quite a few over the years and have one myself they seem very reliable.

Bob, it's died again on me.... Roasted, you know that smell. I'm wondering if it's something else at play, maybe a high current pull.... Or just bad luck with the replacement (salvaged) contactor?

I might need to get a specialist in to check over the machine

Always difficult to judge when fitting a used part. Last time it was the coil that failed IIRC. If it was that again then hopefully it was rated at the correct voltage?

Contact failure is rare but can happen. It is possible to clean them up with care - dismantling can release the ping- f**k-its though so take care.

Good luck

Bob

Thanks Bob,

That's right, coil again :?

When it cools, I'll have a look. I took the last failed coil apart and it was a bit of a mess.

The replacement had the same product code and specs, so it should of been ok. Being an obsolete part my only market for a swap out is the salvaged one. I have a suspicion that the Brook Crompton / Crompton Controls have a bit of a bad rep - when it comes to part quality.

Options seem to be...

• take a £35 punt at a swap out (salvaged Brook Crompton)
• find a replacement coil and cut out and probably a fitter too

So close to Xmas :eusa-doh:

For £20-£30 you could get s new followers starter from toolsatan delivered and rob it for parts to fit inside you control box.
Sorry Yorkshire is a bit far for a house call from romsey lol

Good luck
Bob

Mr Ebay has put his Brook Crompton prices up to £44!

I had a go at a clean out but I think the winding has gone, probably the coating being melted (Shellac?)

Funnily I was just looking at the Toolstation page, couldn't find the coils and wondered if you'd pulled one out of a starter kit :D

Indeed, Romsey is a bit far...are you guy's still in your shorts? Being IOW born and bred I do miss the South Coast

Top tip Bob....

Back in the game.... and clipped in perfectly....wish I'd done this last time!

For some reason, a few years back, I got the impression from Sedgwick & Crompton that I wouldn't find a contactor that would fit or was compatible. This is a LOT cheaper than a new £600 control, which would need adapting to work with this era of PT (MB)

So... What do you do with your spare DOL boxes... Any creative ideas?

Thanks again for the tip,

Jim

Glad you got sorted and so quickly too.
As it happens it has been one of the first few cool days today - below 10C just a little heat on in the workshop.
But we OAPS have thinner blood

Maybe the redundant boxes could be used a drawer dividers of odds and ends.
The NC switch could be used as an emergency stop with a wooden paddle/kick stop perhaps?

Cheers
Bob

Dammit....and there I was going to offer to take that nasty unreliable Sedgwick off your hands for you...save you the trouble of disposing of it

[emoji16] [emoji23].... Tho I thought you had one Roger, maybe the other Roger?

I do love this machine, she's Bob on, with the Tersa knives too [emoji7].... I've changed her motor bearings and block bearings in the past so she's silky smooth... Just like to add a dial or a digital readout for thicknessing at some point

....

I did have one but single phase so given the duff mains supply here sadly had to sell it. Got that combination machine....long story....PITA...if I'd known how things were going to pan out I'd never have bought it.

I remember asking about a digital readout before, but in searching I can't find the post [emoji52] ... However I came across your combination machine post Roger as it mentions digital readers...

That sounds a very frustrating machine. I shared my last workshop with a pal and we used my MB. He now works for company, they have 150k worth of multi axis CNC, but won't replace their Hammer PT, my pal hates it, he mentions all the things you do, springy fence, cupping in the tables and everytime he switches over it goes out of alignment - it drives him nuts! He also mentions their newish Felder K700 saw/spindle which has problems too, and isn't a patch on our old Wadkin. I'm amazed these premium (and pricy) machines have these faults.

Hopefully you'll have the opportunity to switch back to a classic machine in the future.

Chaps- Any ideas where the post on fitting an off-the-shelf digital reader to a PT is? Not having much luck with my searches.

Thanks

Wixey do one but not sure if it would work with the Sedgwick as it's designed for thicknessers that lower the cutter block.

Wixey WR510 Digital Planer Readout with Fractions by Wixey

Machine DRO are a helpful lot and should be able to advise.
I use the wixey on my four post thicknesser but that lowers the cutter.
Wixey also do one with remote readout so you can mount the scale inverted with out having read it upside down.
But check that the zeroing process will work on your machine.
