• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A plea for help and advice on behalf of RogerS

Most of you will know that Roger is moving this week and at the minute he's on the journey down south with his wife following later. He has no or very limited internet access and I've just had a call from him asking if I can ask for advice if anyone can help.

His Hammer combi macchine is sitting in his old garage palleted and ready for transport but despite the company saying they could handle it it now turns out they couldn't and have left it behind.
While they are desperately trying to find a solution Roger wants other options as he's not convinced they can sort it so who can he turn to capable of transporting a large 600kg machine from CA8 to BS26 at short notice?
There is access to the garage though the drive access isn't great however he's had the usual large builders merchant lorries etc.

I'm having my own connection issues here at the minute but promised to relay messages to him later today so any helpful advice would be gratefully received.

This is another reason for my resolve never to move house.

I would remove the second half of the postcodes to protect Roger’s privacy, I know he hasn’t been keen when his address has been revealed on here once or twice in the past!

Thanks Dan. Done. Bit of luck that the lovely landlord of the rental has put in Gigaclear which we can use.

Done. I posted in a hurry as I was on my way out and didn't think. o_O

How about haulage firms at either locations.

Perhaps someone with a plant trailer? If I had my van still I would have done it if we could get it on board.
I reckon 600kg will be on the limit of many tail lifts?

The obvious one is perhaps the "Landy" bloke who moves lathes? I haven't got his details to hand, and I'm going out the door to lead a walk, but I think.he advertises on eBay and the model engineering/ metalworking sites.
Good Luck Roger.

Is it on a pallet?, if so then a pallet courier will do it and cost about £100, they use 171/2 tonners.

If not then either get someone to go put it on a pallet and secure it, then either arrange courier or hire a luton with a tail lift. Lutons are rated at 500kg but I've lifted bigger.

The other option is like mentioned something like landylift. Prabably quite pricey but guaranteed results

I use national pallets and it would cost £118. Its not that heavy so a driver wouldnt need help loading. Assuming the hardstanding is not gravel etc.

Bit late sorry, I’ve used Palletline in the past, as long as it’s well secured it “should” be ok.
I thought the service was brilliant, as described, it’s hand jacked to the tail lift tied off to the side rails of the truck and off it goes, 10 mins?
But they do transship at other depots on the way.
I do feel for you Roger, pictures of my similar machine being raised up on platforms coming soon, or not if it doesn’t work!
No such thing as an American Palletline unfortunately.

I have decided that using a pallet company is too open to SNAFU’s especially with transshipment at places unknown. Neither is it protected from the elements as when the removal company came the weather was fine and so didn’t need anything. Tables nevertheless have a good coating of Shield Guard.

I need a door-to-door service and I’ve decided to let the removal company solve the issue. After all it is what they are contracted to do.

The elephant in the room is that we are supposed to complete on Monday and are not in a position to provide vacant possession with all the potential financial downsides. Ok at the end of the day any financial loss will have to be made good by the removal company but as we have the buyer from Hell it will be a rocky ride and TBH one that I’d rather not have.

A weekend of worrying looms ahead

Roger, I feel.for you.

This smacks of the removal company pulling a fast one, knowing enough about your situation to believe they can extort (blackmail) more cash out of you.
Stick to your guns, insist they fulfill their contractual obligations.
Knowing your geographical location and having been in your workshop, I can see no physical reason why the big beastie should not be removed. After all,it was 'got in'!

Far from it, Sam. They are being very professional about it. Just that it's outside their comfort zone.

Why can't the removal company hire someone like the Landy bloke to shift it on their behalf. Weather shouldn't be an issue if he takes a roll of industrial "cling film" and thoroughly wraps the whole machine. It could then easily be transported on a trailer. My Ifor Williams can carry a 2 ton payload - but I'm not driving to Zommerzet even for a mate. 😜

Hope your removal company comes good, Roger. At least it's the weather for it, as long as this high pressure lasts.

By the way, Glasto looms on the horizon - just don't be on the M5 for three days (weeks?) either side -- midges will seem insignificant.
Couldn’t believe what an odd assortment of people I ended up in the middle of one day driving near there and at a service area. Couldn’t work out what was going on till I saw the next sign, Glastonbury!

Can you pass the cost of being unable to give vacant possession on to the removal company Roger?
I would have thought so but will ask my solicitor tomorrow.

Edit: Just sped-read their Ts and Cs and 99% confident the answer is yes.

We will be writing formally to them to express our concerns regarding the way this move has been poorly handled compared to the last time we used them eight years ago which was excellent and why we chose them again. LOML and I put it down to the poor work carried out by their estimator who basically cocked up big time.

Ive lost count the amount of times I have used couriers, maybe 60 at a guess. In that time I've had 4 incidents and only 2 were totally their fault. The insurance payed out. One they payed out £750 when all I wanted was £100 to replace some handwheels. I got the machine as well.

I've used them quite a bit too Wallace (maybe 20 times) and the only incident was one that arrived about 8 hours late (shifting a huge table). Zero damage. With on-line reviews today they guard their reputations I think for the man and van operators especially.

Good luck Roger. Hope it works out well. I would stick with the honey rather than stick approach until you have an outcome.
