• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I speak French better than I understand it. The speed is the problem. If people speak slowly, I'm fine, but at normal speed, well I'm not there yet.
I found some Earbud thingies on Amazon. Rave reviews, virtually instant translation into English. €59.99, so I bought them. Delivery Thursday.
Well Thursday came and went, as did Friday.
I was checking my order when I found that they were now on sale for 39.99, or click a button to get them for €24. Exactly. The. Same. Product.
So I ordered them again and when the originals did finally turn up, they went back straight away.
I don't like being so dependent on Amazon, and here out in the sticks delivery is 3 or 4 days, even with Prime. Longer if they use Colis Prive as the courier, who are useless. But the alternative is a long drive, and Amazon's returns policy cannot be beaten. But I just don't understand why they do this random pricing malarkey, it just annoys everyone who has just bought at two-and-a-half times the price.

PS I've just checked and now the voucher price is down to €19.99! Grrrr.

I bought a Casio keyboard on black Friday for our granddaughter, supposedly heavily discounted, I don't pay for prime membership. Two days after delivery they had dropped the price another 15% so I rang them and said "would you like to refund the difference or should I return the original and order again which costs you money in carriage and admin?"
They immediately refunded the money, only £15 but better spent on our granddaughter than given to them.

How on earth did you ring Amazon?

Just contact them on line and request a call back Steve, I've done it a few times and the call has always been within seconds or minutes. I don't know if it's the same in France though.

The way I did it was to click on the item then "cancel order" then "need more help" then "request a call back."

Since Ebay upped the buyer protection scheme I sometimes find Amazon can be a better price with next day delivery to boot.
But if I can wait a few weeks then I will try temu and aliexpress and check their pricing.
Sometimes its similar but often for unbranded stuff its a third of the price for exactly the same gear
Wouldn't like to have to try their returns policy though.
Ali express has such a range of stuff I can peruse for hours .

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on with those Steve
Me too - I have Anker earbuds and the last software update added instant translation.

I tried it in Germany last week, but it was a bit disappoiting - the readout on the phone screen was fast enough to be useful, but the audio feed lagged that by several seconds, so it was only really usable if you were willing to read the translation (which of course you could do without the earbuds!).

These are supposed to have a lag of <= 0.5s, so if that is right, it should be fairly impressive. IIUIC, the app on the phone is a sort of database which lets you have some functionality even when you are offline. They arrive tomorrow (allegedly), so watch this space.

Well they did arrive yesterday, as promised.

Good points:
Excellent sound quality
Comfortable to wear
They connect reliably to my phone
Very nice storage case

Disappointing points
They just don't work.

Not as a translator, anyway. There is a very long time lag, several seconds, sometimes long enough to make me think it wasn't doing anything, so I repeat myself, then it gives me two translations at once. If there is more than one conversation going on at once, the words are all jumbled up. Often it gives a "translation" which is just garbage.

This is very disappointing, especially as the reviews are so good. But I am very underwhelmed, so they are going back.

Dont forget Amazon operate 'gushing review farms' where people are paid to write five star missives for products they have no knowledge of.

I’m fed up of buying stuff from Amazon that fails to live up to its promise. Now I only buy goods that don’t need to ‘perform’, such as books and kitchen utensils. And even then I’ll buy elsewhere if I can, especially from a British retailer.
