• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Another Ouch! thread

Managed to get some lathe time in yesterday, now the temperature in the workshop has dropped a bit.

I was polishing up a bowl using a dome polishing mop in a Jacob's chuck when the morse taper let go and the mop and chuck flew out of the lathe spindle at around 2500rpm, hit the bowl and bounced up into my face - fortunately soft end first, although it still felt like a punch from Henry Cooper.

Now, normally I wear eye protection on top of my regular glasses but I forgot. And of course s*d's law says that the one time you need eye protection is the time you forget to put it on.

The left lens of the specs took the brunt and is completely smashed in. I was seeing stars for about five minutes and there was quite a lot of blood. And it effing HURT like HELL!! The bruising you can see and I have a cut about an inch long under my eyebrow that took about two hours to stop bleeding. An icepack finally did the trick.

Vic (Woodster of these parts) - if you're reading this I'll be talking to you about tapping the arbor so that I can put a drawbar on it - it's not the first time it's come out like that.

Everyone else..... let's be CAREFUL out there! I'm a lucky man - I dread to think what would have happened if it had hit me arbor end first.

What my Geordie Gran would have called a "proper fat eye" :D

Ouch and ouch again.
I never use anything on a Morse taper in the head stock unless it is secured by a through bolt or the tailstock is brought up to support. A good decision on getting it drilled for a bar.
Yes you are right "I will only take this little cut and not bother to put on safety wear" many of us have done it.
Hope it stops throbbing soon

Bloody hell Obi Wan, could you not have used the Force to stop it??? [emoji6]

Seriously though, very blooming lucky indeed, hope it's not too sore.

Cheers
Mark

Ouch! :o Ouch! :o

You are extremely lucky, could have been very serious.
I once had a turning piece fly off the lathe over the right shoulder. I then bought full face protection.

Gosh Terry, that was a close shave. Glad it's not any worse.

RE: drilling the arbor, its likely quite hard so difficult to drill and tap even if you could hold it.
You need one of these:

Plus some M10 threaded rod and a nut. I have some if you need it.

Edit: not sure if it would have made a difference in this case but I read the recommended speed for polishing mops is up to 1500, not 2500?

As an afterthought, it might be safer still to use your collet chuck Terry. Providing that's held in with a draw bar. I say this as most drill chucks are simply pushed on the Jacobs taper on the end of the arbor and could come off. I've had the chuck drop off the taper on my drill press more than once although the Jacobs taper is not in very good condition. Both Morse and Jacobs tapers aren't designed to take sideways loads. I do have a threaded Rohm chuck on a morse taper but they are less common.
