• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I found this in a box of tat at Harrogate show of all places yesterday, I tried to get it for £8 but he insisted on a tenner, was I robbed? :? :lol:

Unlike that infill I have this transitional plane has virtually no rust and in decent condition so minimal work needed. It's Stanley and stamped on the front timber though difficult to read and on the adjuster where I think at first inspection it's marked Pat 724 (I think)and something else, I need to get an eyeglass out. The blade is a Stanley but for some reason there's a Record chip breaker fitted.
My intention is to leave the metalwork as is as much as possible and light treatment to the tote and knob but the sole has been heavily varnished I think later and I don't know whether to strip it off with remover or not, opinions would be welcome.
The only other real issue is the brass adjuster knob which is squashed badly so needs some careful work.

If I had been there I'd have been tempted to buy it as well, especially at that price.

You don't see many transitional planes over here. I only have two - a jack plane by Union with an unusual adjuster and one of the short-lived Marples planes from the 60s, with an iron frog in a laminated beech body.

They both work well and successfully combine easy adjustment with a lighter weight body.

I just looked back at what Patrick Leach had to say about these planes - http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan4.htm#num35 . It's more positive than I thought, despite the photo of a transitional plane burning brightly. I expect you've got a useful alternative to explore there which won't need much more than cleaning the dirt off.

And I think I'd just leave the adjuster as it is. Some brasses are quite easy to crack if you try to reshape them.

I am wondering though, based on the membership of this forum, if you are are all members of "plane's anonymous" and failing to cure the addiction. 8-)

I intended all mine to be users when I bought them, but I have managed to buy 2 or 3 duds. I would never buy a plane (or any other tool) if I didn't at least think I would use it.

I used to think like that. Then you come across something different, that makes you wonder what it's like to use. (As with
Lons in this thread). Or else someone gives you an old plane and you find out it's from the 1740s which makes it nice to keep but not one you'd want to use if you have an alternative, which you already do... and then you find your workshop has no room for more shelves... :cry:

I'm not addicted (honest),or a collector, just a hoarder :eusa-naughty: I do have rather a lot of stuff tucked away though, :eusa-doh:
