Any recommendations for external sliding glass doors

As the subject line, really. SWMBO is quite keen on having some of these. Been watching too much Grand Designs! :lol:

The ones I'm thinking of are with, say, three doors that slide across each other down to one door width.

Roger, have you looked at stacking doors?
We built with sliding doors and windows in the 3 bedrooms (lots of light and bright) and then in the living area a 3-panel stacking door to the patio and a 5-panel stacking door to the North. All aluminium framed.
The stacking doors give us a 1-panel opening, 2 etc.

All are fitted with Low-E glass (6mm) and a 35% film on the inside.

I did wonder about that but don't they need a recess to stack into ?

On the inside when they are open is flat. They stack on the outside so not a problem.

Those are what we call bifold doors Phil. Sliding doors I take as being glass doors that slide one in front of the other only and do not swing open/ out.

We have bifold doors on our extension. the same company also made our lantern roof. Origin Doors - but they don't appear to do sliding doors.

Robert, you are right. Out here we know them as either bi-fold or stacking doors.
I have also seen stacking doors also referred to as say 3 panels sliding in front of each other - shops & restaurants. You loose the space in the opening of one width, as opposed to getting probably getting 90% open area with the bi-fold.

I remember your extension and the doors, wood always looks good, but in our very dry climate aluminium is a lot less maintenance All our windows, sliding and stacking doors are aluminuim framed in bronze colour.

Roger take a look at Warmcore by synseal. I have just signed off on replacement of all our rotten old softwood windows, doors and bi-folds with a company fitting this product. Upvc central Core to the frames giving low U value wth aluminium facings on the inside and out. Both sides can be powder coated different colours to match your internal colour scheme.

I've played with a few at the showroom and customers houses and they appear very good quality indeed.

Dunno mate not had them fitted yet. Also depends on the width of the individual doors I guess. Difficult to tell in the showroom but the frames are quite slender comparative to others we looked at so hopefully not too bad. I'll tell you for sure in 4-6 weeks...

The windows (and doors) are composite, being PPC aluminium on the outside and timber inside, and they look gorgeous. Frankly if people want sliding doors these days I usually point them at some frameless glazing, they get all excited and start salivating, and then hear the price. At that point we go back to bi-fold doors, or good old French windows.

Oh, you've done it now. "Frameless glazing" was exactly the term I was looking for to meet Chief Designers wishes. She's been bending my ear about this idea for ages.

Like I said.......they go on lots and lots of my drawings, but very few (=none!) of my completed domestic projects.

In the end I opted for Solarlux doors for several reasons.

They were by far the most cost-effective solution. Much lower price than Velpac (which didn't meet the design criteria anyway as they slide left and right leaving two fixed panes on either side which we did not want).

Their sightlines on the meeting rail are much thinner than the others and so giving the impression of being 'open' when they are, in fact, closed.

Their price included installation and VAT. The guys that fit them are FENSA rated and so I can get the bit of paper. And they are literally just down the road in Carlisle. I've got them to liaise directly with my builder ...first meeting Tuesday on-site.
