• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

**ATTENTION** - And we're done!

That got your attention eh?! :)

So I've finally got my backside into gear and planned and tested migrating the forum over onto the new server/hosting package. This will, in theory, give us more bandwidth, more processing power, basically a faster responding forum, for less money than we are paying now! :D

I've tested the process of migrating the actual forum and that works fine, myself and the other Mod's have proved this, so with that I'm happy. The one bit I have no control over is the time it will actually take to move the domain (the http://www.thewoodhaven2.co.uk bit) between packages.

The instructions say we need to plan for 24-48 hours, but it's not uncommon to see it happen in under and hour! Helpful…NOT!

Anyway, I am planning to do this on Saturday (21st) night thus all being well we'll be back up and running by end of Sunday at the latest.

I just wanted to let everyone know because I will be closing the forum to new applications and logins (so you will have no access) from approximately 8pm on Saturday. If you try to get to the site and cannot then don't panic, just keep coming back and it will hopefully all arrive back safe and sound… :?

If you think it's going on too long or are worried there's issues then please drop me an email on admin@thewoodhaven2.co.uk and I'll gladly give you a status update, assuming I'm not crying into a glass of whisky having failed miserably!!!

Just for info, I won't be touching anything on this instance of the forum, so all data will remain untouched from both the forum software and the database perspective. I will literally just be exporting a copy of the DB, copying it over to the new package, editing a single file to point to the new DB name, then kicking off the domain migration, which is all in the hands of the host.

The reason for telling you the above is just to assure everyone that even if something went awry with the domain move that all your data, posts, threads etc is thoroughly safe and it would just be a case of pointing the forum back to it in emergency. But we won't have an emergency, will we children...

Any questions or concerns then please shout up and I will do my best to answer them.

Cheers
Mark

Will we be keeping the same forum software (phpBB)?

Yes Mike. There will be no change there. We are just changing the box in which the forum is kept. Moving it has been tested. The unknown is how long the rest of the Internet addressing system will take to find the new box. The address links you currently use will not change at all.

Mike - Yes, as Bob says, I am changing nothing, just taking a copy of the existing (both phpBB software and DB) and placing the copies on another server, then pointing the DNS name at the new copy. All else will remain as is.

Rod - good point, not tested that, but in theory all Tapatalk does is point to the DNS entry so nothing should change. I will test today and report back.

David - Thanks, much appreciated. :)

Thanks
Mark

Well done Mark,

Should this thread be rebranded as an Announcement so that it appears at the top of each and every Board?

So....basically an IT project.....nothing to worry about then...phew :-)

Two hours to the end of the world. Nice knowin' you lot :)

Hey chaps

Well that all went remarkably simply (obviously down to my immaculate planning and implementation…). ;)

Domain moved over within about 20 mins, DB copied over fine and we're all good.

Stats taken before and after show the same number of users/posts/threads, and Terry's final post before I locked the board down was still the final post when it was all moved over, so I think we're good…

Let me know if you find any oddities, but I really don't think there should be because as previously stated, no content has changed.

Cheers

Well done, Mark.

So are you two guys Very Early Birds or Late Night Owls!!

Well done Mark and crew! :eusa-clap:

Isn't it wonderful when an operation goes smoothly. 8-)

Well, it wasn't that smooth for me.....

My desktop shortcut, and my favourites/ bookmarks link, both took me to a holding page (300 multiple choices.....here: index.php) so for a couple of days I have thought that you guys were struggling. I have only got here eventually via Dogpile (some people use Google for the same job, I've heard).

Interesting Mike as I did not have to change my bookmarks at all. Makes me wonder if there are others with the same problem.

This seem very strange Mike? Three PCs and my phone all needed no changes to bookmarks to access TWH2 post host move. The URL has stayed the same. Only the DNS servers would have needed to be updated and they live at your ISP and beyond in internetland.

Glad that you are back anyway.

Hmmm, that's not good. Did you get an email from the forum Mike?

I sent out the following to all members upon completion:

All

Apologies for the mass email but I just wanted to let you know that the
forum upgrade is now completed and everything appears to be working as
before.

You shouldn't have any issues with it but if you do then clear your browser
cache of all cookies and entries related to thewoodhaven2 and that should
reset everything.

Please let me know by email if you have issues and I will do my best to
help out, admin@thewoodhaven2.co.uk

Cheers
Mark (TrimTheKing)

I received it so I know it went out, but did anyone else?
