• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Got the usual advertising email from Axi today and it actually made me click a link as i was wondering how the sharpening jig worked with the blade fitted that way round..

I guess none you have the Veritas mk2 honing guide, I will take some pictures tomorrow of it in use. The setup shown is how the jig is used to hone a back bevel on a blade.

Well that's my take on it.
I cannot believe how long it took youtube to process a 6:35 long video so I could publish it. :shock:

Nice video BTW, YouTube is horrible at processing. Took about 10 mins to process a 25s video I did once. I avoid it now where possible…

It's been a bit of a relief seeing the comments later in the thread - maybe I'm not such a sharpening dunce after all :)

Your back bevel at 10 degrees looks quite plausible to this hand tool avoider. Comparing the amount of blade projecting in the email picture to your jig and blade at the end of the video, the angle would have been much greater in the email set up.

In any case I'm just pleased not to be embarrassed at my lack of sharpening knowledge any more :)

Tormek?! There's another jig you don't need! I just lean out the car door on motorways and scrape the blades on the concrete of the M42, far easier and that's what people always did before stones were invented

Good job I have the Jet whet stone grinder, the M42 is too far away for sharpening.[emoji615]

I know there are many ways to sharpen tools, you need to find one that works for you. I use the whet stone grinder for my turning tools. I have a high speed 8" grinder with a support bar to allow the same jigs to be used, for when a major reshaping of a tool is required,
I also use diamond plates for hand sharpening, useful when I am not in the workshop and need to under take major resharpening on a tool. I have 3 ceramic stones I use for the final edge, the ultra fine will give a nice mirror finish if you work at it a bit.

Yes. It is about time they made paint cans ring-pull opening! :lol:


I had to use one of those "blade on a stick" thingies the other day as my router cutter left a round corner and I could not find a square router bit. Chisels are terribly crude devices with no inbuilt accuracy.
Best used for scraping glue and opening paint cans!

Hi Dave,

that's a nice little video showing the use of this excellent tool. I managed to get hold of one off UKW a few weeks ago and it's far superior to anything I have used before. :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap:
