• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

So today I get Axminsters email saying they have a load of clearance stuff on ebay... Having bought a pillar drill from their clearance sale before (at an outrageously low price) I figured it was worth a look...

One quick look says that they may be onto a good thing.. Despite putting their RRP prices in the auction listings and labeling them as "returned due to XXX" I have already spotted two of them going for MORE than the RRP.

I will never understand people who dont read the information in front of them, and make the intellegent decision NOT to bid.

*sigh*
 
It's amazing the amount of items I've seen going second hand on eBay for more than the new price is ridiculous. Some people just assume that ebay is cheaper and buy anyway.

You see this happening in real live auctions too. people seem to have little idea of market retail prices and get carried away.

I the axminster case cited I can see some logic.

By the time something has been returned to axi by a purchaser, they will have devoted time and effort plus two lots of carriage before they decide to shift something onto ebay so it might owe them money already or certainly not showing much profit. Ebay and paypal between them take a good wedge in fees and if some punters will fall for paying over catalogue price for a returned item, good luck to axi I say. Caveat emptor every time.

Axminster have moved their business to what looks like a higher cost model. Instead of warehouse box shifters with an esoteric collection of shops in Axminster village. They now have numerous retail outlets around the country which all need staff and stock on the shelf and they have also set up their own manufacturing facility which although small, is well equipped and with skilled staff as I saw on a visit a few years back. They run a fleet of wagons delivering to customers and presumably to their shops and it all costs
Yes their turnover will almost certain be up but it is a big business now to keep afloat. It is a credit to them that with only very few exceptions that we hear about, their customer service remains excellent.

A large proportion of their customers will want to look and feel so I'm sure the shops work well. The cost of this is top prices and few genuine bargain IMHO. The price savvy punter will often be able to get a better deal elsewhere but not necessarily with the same level of CS.

There was a killer example at my local auction.

A hardware shop (quite a big local chain) had gone belly up.

Lots of ladders in the auction, single, double and triple, mixture of domestic and trade.

Buyers were like bees round a honey pot, sniffing a bargain.

And all the ladders went for WAY over retail!
