• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Does anyone use an azebiki saw (Japanese saw designed for starting cuts in the middle of a piece of wood)? If so, can you tell us something about your experiences with it?

Although I can't really answer your question as I don't have an Azebiki, I've got the Gyokucho folding saw set from workshop heaven and one of the dozukis has teeth that extend to the end of the saw blade.

They don't get used much, but they have been very handy a few times for cutting the edges of slots and things like that. From the photos of an Azebiki I'd guess they wouldn't go into corners as well as the dozuki does. For working with big sheets of plywood, I tend to get the tracksaw out.

I've looked at Azebiki's a few times, but I've struggled to envisage a situation in which I would need one. I'd be interested in hearing other opinions though.

I definitely don’t see an azebiki getting much play when you’ve got that feature in your dozuki.

I don’t think I’ve got much use for one either, but wondered if I was missing anything.

I have one, only used it a handful of times but it's extremely handy when you need it, I used it for cutting stopped housing joints on a piece of wood to prevent sawing all the way through to the front of the cabinet, a normal size saw would not have physically fit in for the cabinet I was making.

That’s great info, Tom & Ben.

For those that can make do with a dozuki that can start a cut in the middle, Gyokucho blades S110 (for the folding saw mentioned by Dr Al) and S306 (for non folding saws) have the curved front.

Edit: The S293 compact blade also has teeth on the curved part of the blade
