Back Saw Scabbard

Fellow student Rory on the New English Workshop ATC Schwarz class with his really nice old back saw

I am thinking of making one of these for my dovetail saw . I havent seen a scabbard like this one before , i think its a good design and should offer great protection .

It looked like the bottom half that covers the blade was one piece, sawn through and then jointed to the top half that the brass back runs through . Had a play around with a few bits of timber for it and found its not an easy piece to make , so will have a proper go at it when i have more time to experiment.

I've got some leather saw cases from Tilgear I think?

Not the best shot but they hold two with a press stud flap over.

English walnut - metal bits Grammercy Sash and Carcase saw kits.
I made the handles a bit thicker hence the bolts are a bit recessed.

Just remembered, I've got an enormous American greenwood saw with a wooden scabbard in my shop - must dig it out when I get home?

I will be interested to see how you get on Bern. I do like the look of the timber case.
Leather always looks great but if you have a moist workshop it can draw the damp into your tools.

Had some time to have a go at this today. Used a bit of mahogany that was once skirting in my old house , must have had this 20 odd years.
Used the dovetail saw to create the slot and then had to open it up bait with a tennon saw .

Started off at about 13mm tapered and thinned it down a bit.

Rebated the top edge down to the thickness of the brass back .

Planned a V in the top tot follow the profile of the back

Run a slot in the piece that covers the brass back 6.6mm

All cut and shaped ready to glue together

Clamped in the vice for an hour

Cleaned it up and filled the open slot with a small plug and sawdust with pva

Put it on the scales and it comes in at just 88 g thats 3 1/8 oz .
Quite pleased how it turned out , sawing the slot for the blade wasnt easy so i think i would joint two or even three pieces together for the next one.

I don't even have one saw like that - so not a suitable project for me then :lol:
Just a builders jack saw than hangs up in a screw through a hole in the blade. Even that does not often get to make sawdust in my shop.

This is the only back saw i have thats worth really looking after , all my other saws are car boot finds that are past their best But i would like to get a couple more , tenon and carcass .I will make scabbards for these .
