• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

When my wife finds out what it was actually I'm making instead of repairing her cheap bathroom cabinet/basin bottom (bathroom installer coming on 13th!) or finishing/continuing my paving slabs/shed project, I'm gonna be in so much trouble. She's already been out asking why I'm not jointing the board thats supposed to be for the cabinet repair!! Too smart...

Anyway, without further ado. I had stopped feeding the birds a month ago due to that virus. But recently on the RSPB site I realised we can still put out mealworm and suet. I did the mealworm but nowt come back yet!! Maybe cos the garden is a mess and my cat (russian blue) is just too naughty and fast, with the feeders being closer to the ground now due to the wooden shed upgrade project.

So, I pulled together some courage (to ignore the wife and tell her its too hot for paving, without lying) and got some Internet inspiration. Got out a fair few boards and engaged brain. In pictures, but not yet complete...

One tip, that you probably found already, don't be tempted to make the entry hole too big, or small birds won't use it. The RSPB site has the details.

Semi open fronted is popular with some uk species.
My " redneck" birdbox was a 10l adblue container with the top half of one of the side panels chopped out with a Stanley knife and hung in the lower bough of a crabapple tree.
I had forgotten about it for 18 months but sure enough there was a nest.

Sorry.i meant bird feeding shelter. I just realised I wrote box. The roof and sides are to hopefully give them a bit more privacy. Not making it a box means (hopefully) it remains cleaer as I'll have 2 hangers in there. One for worms or suet and the other for water or one of the aforementioned. Still gotta think it through and good shout on the entry hole (noted for future ref).

A box will be a project at some point Fuse. Once I get a chance to breathe. Lol... After this it'll be a hedgehog house as there's definitely a few around out back gardens and I'll make sure to not close the entry points to my garden whilst refurbish the fence.

Bit more... Hopefully it's something that actually gets finished from amongst my many projects. The wife finally brought in the loop and she said, 'its nice'. So, all is well...20260708_170543.jpg

Don't tell the birds the stock was not properly squared up! From top to bottom. An old drawer front for the roof, attached to a piece of my sycamore tree that was made into an unusualy shape for some reason, bedside is the white pieces and the metal bit also from same bedside. Felt stronger than pine when ripping into it!!

The bracing is all the sycamore tree I've been processing. Screws an assortment of quality, some used Wickes specials. Bit of wood glue on a bit I snapped off... Getting there.

I can't find the communal thread that has, 'whats have you made' in it. So I shall just whack the finished product out here. Hope they like it and I may go and get some fat balls from B&Q just now!!
