• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Had a grand couple of days down in Maidstone, Kent I’d traveled down with my mate Jon to go to the FFX tool show, while there we met up with an old forumite & friend Simon from Oryx Design host of several get togethers.

After the show & obligatory curry Simon invited us to pop over to his workshop on Saturday morning an offer readily accepted as it had to be around 10 years since Tom & he organised Ye olde Kent bash at the workshop & I was keen to see how it had evolved.

After a guided tour of his really well organised shop Simon showed us the processes involved in programming & cutting out on his cnc, this is the name plaque he drew & routed in an Oak off cut.

I don’t know how to upload a video but if you want to see the machine in action Cutting the name I posted a video on my Instagram feed.

He also showed us the collaspable saw horse he had designed & made on the cnc

He refers to it as the mark one as he has plans to reduce the amount of board left in the finished horse to reduce the weight but for such a simple slot together design it was remarkably sturdy, definitely on my wish list.

I’ve not had anything to do with cnc’s before but have to admit to being so impressed with them, their scope seems only limited by the imagination, if only I had more space :eusa-think:

Excellent mate. Simon's a top guy, and his wife Sarah is also top notch. Lovely and very talented people and it's probably 10 years or so since I last met them down at Cressing Temple. That may have been the first time I met you too...

It would certainly be the right time scale Mark, We saw Sarah briefly she was looking well, Simon was telling us he’s been helping Wealdens design & develop cutters & saw blades, their business seems to be doing really well.

A very nice couple, they held a “bash” in their showrooms/workshop many moons ago.
I demonstrated my Japanese knives and the EdgePro sharpening system.
There was a very good turnout, I went with Bob and I think Rob.

I'd forgotten about that meet up at Simon's. Where does the time go?

Funny I live in the same village as Simon’s workshop and walked past it saturday morning. Not something I often do.

It would be almost exactly 9 years ago we had the bash in their workshop. My wife was due to give birth any day and my daughter is 9 next week!!!

Was it he who had that cottage fire all those years past ?

It was his neighbours house that caught fire but it badly affected his & the other adjoining neighbour Rog

I remember seeing the pictures at the time. IIRC the roof space above his daughters bedroom was alight. scary stuff.

Indeed. I remember going to two bashes in Kent, one at Simon's place, the other in Tom's old 'shop and I remember seeing your sharpening set up for Japanese knives

We had a few good bashes at my place as well, that was some years ago now - Rob

Simon was saying he’d had 4 get togethers in total over the years I only got to the first one the 400 mile round trip being fairly prohibitive, we tend to meet up at shows these days rather than workshops it seems a lot easier though organising the Friday night curry gets more fraught each year.

FFX this year wasn’t too bad thankfully as it was my turn to sort the curry but as there was only 15 for the meal it wasn’t too difficult to organise, the D&M show now that’s a headache :o

BTW if you’re in Maidstone & fancy a curry The Gurkha Kitchen is well worth a try as is the rather odd sounding Shamrat
