• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Only had it just over a week and around 90 miles but it’s currently clocking an eye watering 16mpg ave!!! I did rag it around the farmers field for about 2 hours and about 30 miles the day I got it so that hasn’t helped, but I’m certainly going to win no eco warrior status!!!

Don’t ask me why! I’ve just always wanted a pickup and I test drove them all and the Ford was by far the nicest (in my price range) so we got it. Passat, as much as I love it, is going to the FiL.

My neighbour across the road has had ford pick ups for years, he loves them, a quick google of average mpg doesn’t bode well, I thought my Transporter was heavy on the juice but it looks like your pickup is a tad thirstier :?
 
16mpg ffs!...I got more than that out of a 2.5l Landrover Defender. 'Er indoors will kick that into touch shortly :D - Rob
 
Yeah luckily it is my runaround and I only do about 6k per year max otherwise it would be a killer.

Can’t wait to take it off-road though.

Ohh nice - I have wanted one of these for a while. SWMBO calls it my midlife crisis. Sadly I need to do 90 odd miles to work (and 90 back) daily when I cannot use the motorbike in the Winter so 16mpg would kill that idea. My research suggested I might get 35mpg? :eusa-think: I currently run an 05 plate Honda CRV and get 30mpg for that which already costs an arm and a leg in fuel - was hoping to get a bit better on my next motor!

When I drove it to my little lad's football last weekend it managed 26mpg down country lanes with me using the cruise control on all straight runs. Not had it on any kind of motorway drive yet so will try and do some thing week and let you know what it gets on there...

Really is a lovely motor inside, very big and comfortable, and makes me feel manly! :lol:

Totally unnecessary extravagance for me, given the amount of that kind of stuff it will actually do, but hey, you're only young once eh, and there's no pockets in a shroud (as my Gran used to say)!

The cab is massive inside, probably the same physical length as my Passat estate but because of the higher driving position there's tons more legroom in the back. In fact, with my drivers seat at normal position I can site behind it with a good 6" of legroom and I'm 6'3" so really spacious for moving people around.

I watched a bit of tv last night about Big Cranes - the drivers were fixated on getting bigger and bigger cranes.

I suppose I got my fix of off-roading during my years on construction sites building motorways and roads. Mostly on greenfield sites where vehicles hadn’t travelled before.
We used to have a “Wall of Shame” pin board full of photos of Land Rovers etc being “rescued “ by tracked diggers etc.

Always hankered after after a Land Rover, early model. Unlikely now :(
 
Looks like it will have either a 2.2 or 3.2 l diesel engine. How on earth is the fuel consumption so poor?

I had a 2.0 Duratorq engine in my Cmax which would do 55 to 60 mpg. my Skoda Octavia 3- 2.0 diesel manages 65 or more.
OK yours has more weight and 4WD to soak up more fuel but 16 mpg FFS??

I hired a SWB transit the other day which was possibly the 2.2 duratorq engine and got 45 mpg which I was quite impressed with considering it has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Maybe you normally drive a petrol car? A diesel needs a different driving style to get reasonable economy with no need to exceed 2000rpm.

Mark enjoy your new toy, the Rangers do look good pimped up, I’m on my 4th Navarra this one is the 3ltr V6, I get about 27 mpg about town and upto 35 mpg on a run, unlike you I do about 30,000 miles a year in it as it’s my work vehicle, I’ve been looking at the Ford ranger and Mercedes X class as a replacement this year, the merc is probably going to win out, Ive got a test weekend booked for the merc, Ford will only do a test drive and won’t let me hook up a trailer and digger.
Ive had 4x4 pickups for about 25 years now and they have certainly improved vastly in the last few years.
If I could get her indoors to agree I’d import a Ford F-150. Mind you I’d have to do tons of overtime to fuel it

Yeah of course it’s an extravagance but the wife has wanted one for ages and go a decent pay rise so along with a couple of other personal factors it was she what drove the decision.

I just go along with it, she’s the accountant...

Hi Bob

Yeah 3.2l v6 lump in the front.

I am indeed used to driving a 1.9l, 7 speed auto Passat which over its 37,000 mike life thus far, nearly every mile of it by me, it’s averaging about 32mpg which is decent given mostly it does town driving to get me to the station and only opens up at weekends really.

I do need to look at my driving style with this truck definitely, it’s a novelty at the moment. The torque when taking off from a standing start is phenomenal! I’m driving it in 2 wheel mode at the moment and if I floor it from a standing start can wheel spin it like I can the front wheels on the VDub!

I am taking the manual with me in my train journey tomorrow to familiarise with all the bells and whistles so will look at driving advice for a big diesel too...

Any tips?

Keep the revs down, which means lots of gear changing when you move off. I'm normally in 4th before 30mph. Don't exceed 2000 rpm. Use all the torque available and only change down below 1100 rpm. turn off the auto stop unless you wnat to kill your starter motor. These things are total madness. Normally on a journey you use the starter once. With auto stop it will work 10 or 20 times harder and I bet it is the same design of starter.
Looks like you have radar cruise control. I have it on the skoda and it is brilliant. Hopefully it lets you change gear without the cruise dropping out. My Cmax did not and it was a pain.
Once on reasonably open roads just set the cruise for a sensible max road speed and it will maintain a sensible distance from the car in front and it slows down when needed and even apply the brakes for you. It will possibly tell you if you need to change gear. Basically you just have to steer it.

I tend to use the cruise control even in my Passat as I have a naturally heavy foot if you know what I mean...

Nice looking set of wheels!

My pick up is a real work horse, then I brought my Molly (Nissan Navarre) 14 year's ago it was a necessity, I'm out in the bush in rural Spain and she was the only vehicle that would get in and out in the winter.
I've made various gizmos to get timber on easily, I've had up to 2 m2 of tulip on the roof.
