• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

It was my brother's 60th last month so I thought I'd make him a wee box. English walnut, burr walnut base, handle carved from the front lid rail, panelled lid. Finish is white polish and wax.

Wrapped up and posted to him tomorrow - Rob

Nice looking box, hope he is pleased with it, I would be. [emoji2]
Seems a bit of a shame to hide that bur as the base.

Very nice box Rob, :eusa-clap:

What will he keep in it? Some Cuban cigars?
Hmmm, yes, good idea.

Cheers
Phil

Thanks chaps. These were bits and pieces left over from SWIMBO's big chest of drawers project. I've done all the cutting for that one so this little box was made from some of the oddments left over. The grain on this one is fairly plain but I think my bro' will like it when he opens the package...going to be wrapped in bright red, white spotty paper! - Rob

Rob,

It is a beautiful box. Could you maybe give a bit more detail about how you made the pull/handle? It is perfect, and that is the kind of detail that I really struggle with.

The rail is cut much wider to begin with when the lid is fitted. The rough outline is then cut with the lid in place on the box, which is a bit hairy on the bandsaw  The top is shaped with a spokeshave and the concave underside is then made with a tiny 6mm carving gouge, smoothed with a profiled scraper made from an old HSS hacksaw blade and finished with sandpaper, from 150g to 320g. The lid edge is shaped with a block plane, cabinet scraper, rasps and files so both are flush and level. The main thing is that the shaping is done with the lid in place. Hope this is of some help - Rob

Is there a bit of odd stainage on the underside of the lid Rob?

Cheers

Yep, there is Mark. Some of the walnut I was using did have this peculiar staining (if that's what it is) but it was patchy and didn't show on the upper side. I think I may drop into Meldrew mode, take all the boards back and complain....

Very nice Rob, is it on feet or runners?

It's just on a couple of blocks of wood to raise it off that grey surface as I thought it might look better in the pics if it was photographised like that - Rob

English walnut is sooooooo variable. Some of it looks almost green. But it is just about the perfect wood to be cutting dovetails in, and for shaping a handle like that. That's another very nice box.

Very nice! Does the lid hinge on a pin/dowel?
The hinge is just a couple of 2.5mm steel pins, very easy to do.

Thanks Mike. There's not a lot you can't do with English walnut...wonderful stuff! - Rob
