• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Brexit legislation and timber imports

While digging around trying to get information on how to stop those timber lorries from chewing up our tiny lanes, I stumbled across this disquieting stitch-up planned by the Forestry Commission and the Government. It's the Applied plantation reduced income legislation ( imported softwood taxation). Basically the Forestry Commission has persuaded the government to apply a massive import taxation on all imported softwoods - something like 400% has been mooted - to encourage the use of UK grown Sitka spruce.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been picked up by our industry.
 
Sums up the whole bloody problem with Brexit. Everyone is vying to get something out of it. The fact that 400% has been mooted sums it up. Nothing agreed so little more than a scare story at the moment. Market forces will prevail I am sure.

Do you listen to farming today on R4? Most of the programme is dedicated to one organisation or another worried about what will happen during and after the transition period. Very little based on fact just fears.

I understand that there are likely to be winners and losers but there was before Brexit anyway. I said before the referendum that Brexit will be used as an excuse for every business failure whether due to market forces, incompetent management or the change in trading regulations for many many years to come.

I am not sure what the point is.

Other countries do it to protect their own farmers and industries.
BMT is doing it in the USofA to protect their jobs and local industries.
(Locally we have hefty import duties on luxury goods.)

You can only protect your local farmers and industries up to a point where they become inefficient and not cost effective.

Andy is quite right, market forces will prevail.

If the UK does not want to buy the Nordic timber, someone else will.
If your local timber prices and quality are out of line, then people will start importing.

The world is just one big free trading market.


Years ago I purchased paper from local suppliers. Then one day they wanted a 14% increase without any real motivation (labour costs etc.)
So I imported from USofA and landed cost lower than local price before their 14% increase.

And the moral of the story is - don't panic, just wait and see how it all unfolds.
