Bunk bed

Made a start yesterday evening on a pile of pine destined to become a bunk bed, after a couple of hours bandsawing, planing & thicknessing the components were all run out



& I was also left with 2 bags of shavings, at least the ducks,geese & chickens will be pleased with it



It also appears taking photos with my phone side ways on is the trick to getting Apple to upload said photos onto the forum in the correct orientation :eusa-dance:

Nothing special Mark the request was for as cheap as possible it’s going in a box room & the only place it can go is over the sloping bulkhead of the stairs that projects into the room, I’d altered a single bed previously to fit the same space but the arrival of another child 3 years ago necessitates a bunk bed.

Spoke too soon re the photos had to re-size these to get them to display the correct way :eusa-doh:

Managed to get the components cut to length this morning the short rails cut on the sliding able




I set up a stop block on the bench for the long rails




& also the legs




Then chamfered the ends of the legs



Next up some housing joints

What an obvious and easy way to chamfer leg ends. I wonder why I've never thought to do them that way before.

I remember thinking the legs on my desk could use a chamfer then didn't do it because it was too much messing about

I do them in a similar way but on the tablesaw with a stop block clamped on the mitre gauge.

Dead easy with parallel legs but needs a bit of thought with a tapered leg.

I do short lengths similarly on the sliding table Bob but at nearly 1.7m long the chop saw was the easier option for these legs.

Very True Doug. The longest I've done have been table legs.

Managed to get all the housing joints trenched out on the chop saw




Then removed the waste with a chisel & routerplane



Managed to get 3 completed before it was pub o’clock



Hopefully I can get this done & ready for finishing tomorrow

Haven’t had chance to post up progress on this before now but here’s the completion of the bunk bed.

I drilled the ladder rung holes at the pillar drill




After which I eased all the edges on the legs with a 4mm bearing guided router cutter



Before glue up I gave everything a good sanding which gave me a chance to used my latest workshop acquisition a Mirka sanding block with dust extraction, I’ve got to say I’m really impressed with it, using Abranet abrasive there was virtually no dust escaping.



The ladder section glued & clamped



The bed sections were dominoed at the corners with a strip of wood glued & dominoed on the bottom edge of the long rails for the slats to rest on, all the edges were again eased with the router & sanded



Everything was then given two coats of Treatex hardwax oil then waxed with woodwax 22 applied with webrax & buffed

This afternoon I went & fitted the bed, the room is less than 6 foot square a cat would definitely have a headache, so it was a tad tight not only fitting it but also getting photos, these are the best I could manage with my phone







The bottom slats are from the previous bed & were a slat short for the new bed so I need to run one out tomorrow but other than that it’s finished & most importantly a 3 & 6 year old are very happy indeed.

The speed at which you have completed this project leaves me in awe. Would have taken me a month at least.
Is it a small single, 2’6” or a full single at 3’?

It’s a strange size Andy, the mattress was 700mm wide..
I’ve got quite a few jobs coming up in the workshop so the faster I can get them out of the door the better.

That must be fun to find fitted sheets for.

The concept of a small single does not exist here so we still buy all the bed linen for the kids bed in uk.
