Burnt Cladding Technique - Japanese

Hi all.

Anyone any experience of use or thoughts on the burnt Japanese timber cladding detailed here? Ive never heard of it before.

Somebody did it on one one of the Grand Design builds.
It's supposed to be very effective. I'm pretty sure they just burnt the surface.

My main concern would be stability of the top surface and how you would seal it to prevent it making anything that touches it black with soot. :eusa-think:

Looks like an oil treatment afterwards. They brushed all the soot off and powerwashed.

The process looks similar to what I did.

42 Years ago when we got married there was no money for new furniture (as a bachelor I had accumulated a lot of stuff) and an upside down beer crate just did not qualify as a coffee table.
I got hold of some chunky pine off cuts and planks and made a rough table, all screwed together.
Then took the gas blowtorch and burnt the top layer of the pine. Rubbed it down with a steel brush, cleaned it up and polyurethaned it.

It lasted many years before being donated to a charity.
