• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. My winter project is to refurbish a nice wolf bench grinder.

I was thinking about a CBN wheel.

Any thoughts or experiences of these?

I found it difficult to control and skitish in the corners. decided to go back to rubber tyres on normal rims.

the sparks as I went over cats eyes were fun though. :D
 
You'd need to ensure the spindles of the grinder are long enough, no matter what you put on it. They tend to be short - designed for a 5/8th wheel (at least, mine is.)

Nasty stutter you have there Phil, but information filed away for when I strip down the machine.

ok, in all seriousness, for the cost I found they offered minimal improvement over a silcone carbide wheel with a decent dressing on a highspeed grinder (3750rpm), the only benefit was the wear wasn't as quick. I tried 2, one had a very thin strip of resin impregnated material around an "aircraft" grade aluminium hub. It was setup in the welding shop, within 5 weeks there was a noticable grove in the centre of the wheel from tungsten grinding, I think we could have used 1 in a year with ease, in the home shop, I reckon I could have seen 10 years easily, but I could see that from a normal wheel, so the cost wasn't worth it to me.
the other had more meat on it so to speak, but wasn't as resistant to wear (higher amount of resin me thinks), it was considerably cheaper but groved and needed dressing more often.

slower face speed will improve the wear considerable.
 
Nasty stuff given off apparently in the sparks/dust from a CBN wheel so decent PPE might be a mandatory requirement - Rob
