• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

About 18 months ago I made myself a chessboard. I cut a little too much off one side, and it sat on a shelf in my shop for about 12 months, unfinished and collecting dust.

I asked my friend at work if he'd like a nice chopping board. He said yes, so I added a border to it - (at which point the error became less apparent and I began to regret giving it away...but hey-ho) - gave it to him and he took it home.

His wife said 'You aren't cutting anything on that!' and it now resides in their living room.

My friend said his wife and 8 year old boy now play a lot of draughts (checkers) on it - so I made a set to go with the board.

Made from brass and polished steel, going to be tough to keep clean !

It's hard to tell in that photo, but if you compare the left side to the bottom row, you can see it's a bit narrower. It looked worse before I added the border, and it looked a lot worse to me because I knew it was there !!

I'm actually glad I gave it away though. Both my friend and his wife were genuinely over the moon with it, and I know she's been showing it off to her family. It'll be used, appreciated and cherished a lot more than if I'd just put it in my living room - and that's worth a lot !

Well I think she was right, too nice to use as a cutting board.
Did you put any finish onthe metal? I know my sweat would mark them if they were mine.

No, they are unfinished apart from the polishing.

My friend is an ex-toolmaker now teacher, and I've already told him that I've provided the pieces, it's up to him how he keeps them clean !

Both the board and the wee box look great!

No woodwork for me at the moment - ripping the innards out of the spare bedroom back to the stone. Only woodwork will be cutting out the timber lintels over the windows in the old stone walls before replacing them - another job I'm not really looking forward to.
