• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I’ve just had my latest tariff information through from BG based on the energy cap.

Electricity only, 28.408p kwh (was 21.607). Daily charge 51.626p per day up from 25.664p. Don’t think the kwh increase was too bad but doubling the daily charge feels a bit like urine removal!

More concerning for us is the huge increase in heating oil. Had to pay almost 87p per litre when a day or so ago it was ‘only’ 62p.

We can mange but I worry for those who are financially on the edge.

I heard something the other day to say theat the huge hike in standing charge was justified/allowable by OFGEN on the basis of the suppliers extra costs due to becoming suppliers of last resort.

So this could be thought of as paying towards the last periods price cap perhaps?

Ensure that you have a meter reading submitted before the end of March.
Don't let a estimate cover March and April.
Regardless of your supplier.

My current estimates are way under what the meter is showing.

I'd add take photo of the meter readings so that if needed you can argue against their estimates for the tariff changeover.

Yesterday I went to buy 2000 Ltr heating oil and nearly had heart failure with the price quoted, I decided to have a ring round today and the cost had actually gone up over night and it cost me more than it would have yesterday, also they can’t guarantee the delivery date I was told 10th March but that’s only if the supply chain keeps flowing.
I can see the heating being turned right down or even off

I had the same, 2200 litres cost me £1380 ish.

Shocking! During first lockdown it was down to 20p a litre or so. 2500 litres costing me less than £600. So volatile!

Never have I been so glad to take long fixes - mine atm is 17.35p by day, 10.36p by night and the standing charge is 21.8p. :eusa-dance:

Yes, the gas price rise from Eon is extraordinary.

Currently I have nicely warm feet in front of the woodburner. Courtesy of the storms, working at a site with a fair bit of parkland, and new rules making unseasoned wood harder to sell, next year's supply is free.

Another thought. The UK sources only 5% of our gas from Russia. If we can just reduce energy usage by 5%, that could be zero. And compensate a tiny bit for the price rises, and benefit the environment.

I'm on a fixed rate which ends in August so a little room to breath unless Shell Energy goes to the wall but we don't have gas and have to heat using oil which we'll need to buy in the next few weeks so I'm not looking forward to that.

I took a two year fix which ends 31/7. I've always done well out of fixed rates, but never so well as I've done with this one. Mine's electricity only.

As i’ve mentioned previously i’m on a commercial has tariff, trying to change but no one wants new business at the moment.
Just had another price increase advice.

Gas. 12.35p a unit
Standing charge 100p a day.

Talking with friends in the oil industry they’re expecting prices to reach new record highs if ukraine isn’t resolved quickly.

Inevitable isn’t it.
Germany, due to 20 years power sharing with the Greens, shut down their domestic power resources and are now hostage to Russia for fuel, so just that one country is going to swallow up all alternatives at any cost.

We on the other hand could be sitting here feeling smug if we had not succumbed to the same ideology and got fracking in north England.

It's worrying how expensive it is at the moment, let alone when there are 40% increases in oil and gasses prices again at the moment!

Before the prices started creeping up last year I was paying about £110 a month for gas and electricity then it was at about £130 but going through a supplier into administration I knew that wasn't enough. I have calculated today and a few facts for my supply;

- if my new unit and daily charges from April were applied to my bill for the last 3 months it would have cost over 60% more than what it did.
- rough calculation I reckon my monthly payment should be just over £200
- with the arrears which aren't huge and the almost certain increase in October I'm considering putting my direct debit up even higher might as well get used to it.

I'm pretty well paid compared to average wages, although we are a one income household. How on earth are people on low incomes going to afford this.

That is not the answer

Agreed, it is NOT the answer.

Is that the benefit of a larger tank or do you have a contract?

At nearly 63p a litre I’d have bitten their hand off yesterday!

No during first lockdown because nobody was driving, boats/planes grounded etc, fuel costs bottomed out around 20.8ppl, plus I get a good price for large tank (2500 litres), but it's shocking now, see below...

Hi team.

if I was to accidentally over-state my meter readings as much higher than they are until the old FIX finishes is that legal.?
yearly gas+elec at moment £1200 , new fix £2500.
over paying £500 now could be worth at least £1000.?

Slim shady,

The numbers are quite small and with poor eyesight it’s easy to misread a digit :o

I read an article from a well reputed author to the effect that most key meter operators would allow extra credit to be added to keys this month and it would be credited as kWh rather than £s
This is of course different from the question posed above

Gosh, I can't imagine anyone with sufficient moral depravity to contemplate such a scheme.

You'll be suggesting next that people have drawn up spreadsheets that calculate what the highest feasible putative consumption that can be declared to be charged at the lower rate might be.

Helps if your meters are within your own property, and cannot be accessed without your co-operation. I'm told. By a friend.

thanks gents,
I must get my eyes tested.

Any other areas of opportunity to make mistakes.
I eat lots of toast, drink wine, cider, beer, etc.

Slimshady.

Does anyone know which is more cost effective for hot water (assuming the CH is off).

The oil CH boiler or electric immersion?

With prices all over the place, it becomes one of those "it depends" questions.
Tank losses will be common to both as will usage pipe losses.
Immersion heater is 100% efficient energy transfer to the water.

Boiler fired up from cold to heat hot water is least likely to be working in condensing mode due to the water temps needed by the tank so finding what your boiler efficiency is will be difficult other than by logging oil used in a given period Vs leccy used in a very similar period. Essential that the thermostats are identically set.

I actually use the immersion stat to control my boiler. But with two random solar inputs to water heating as well as boiler comparisons are beyond my interest level.

A slightly better scientific way to remove the climate variation from measurement would be to run alternate days oil and leccy but that takes patience and discipline as well as precision oil flow measurement.

Even better if it's in an external wall cabinet but some person has built a garage around it and therefore it needs a door key to be accessed. Only saying ;)

As hopefully most of you are already aware the "energy price cap" figures bandied about are a misnomer and not the maximum annual bill but instead relate to the maximum unit prices and maximum daily standing charges which when multiplied by TYPICAL usage by the average household equal the quotes numbers.

A table of maximum prices based on geographic region and tariff type are available here.

https://octopus.energy/documents/114/Of ... _rates.pdf

These are meant to be maxima but I doubt many suppliers will be adopting much lower figures when they announce their tariffs.
The biggest hike is likely to be in the standing charges and is from a mix of actual increased distribution costs AND a component reflecting the losses made by the suppliers when they pick up customers of bankrupt suppliers and become suppliers of last resort.

I've had to order 1000 ltrs of oil this morning and having to pay 1.25p per litre so £1250.00  and that's after my usual supplier has discounted the 5% vat content which they pay as a loyalty bonus. Compared to 52p a litre I paid at the end of October. It is premium oil with additives but I've compared other quotes for standard oil and can find some a bit cheaper however when you come to order or ring them up the price changes or is applied at the rate on the day of delivery.

Thank you for making me feel (marginally) better at my 89.9p.

Around here few are offering a price and instead stating that you pay the going rate on delivery day.

Well, thermostat turned down to 16.5 degrees. Three hours in the morning. Three hours in the evening.

Very close to putting 100€ petrol in the car. Some stations around here have a 100€ max. €1.90/l or about 1.60 of your pounds.

Yup and it’s going to get a lot worse, most places here are £1.50 to £1.60 now, M3 motorway yesterday £1.75 and Chelsea a stratospheric £2.20 a ltr in the papers a couple of days ago.

You would save even more now.

At the moment we are running on the genny at ZAR21.00/litre. :(
Been without power now since yesterday afternoon.
A lightning strike hit the main power line infeed substation. At this stage about half the east side of Pretoria is still without power.
Going to go and buy more genny-juice. :( :(

Today for the first time I saw petrol, e10, advertised at 2€ /l. You can imagine the psychological effect that has here.
