Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. I'd put money on it being Boxwood, especially if it's of any age - Rob
It looks relatively modern to me (20th century, not 19th) what with it being marked in cm as well as inches. Also, the metal parts being steel (presumably) not brass.
So possibly made of something else after boxwood had become harder to find. Even without a maker's name on it, £3 looks like a bargain price.

The metal isn’t a repair, it’s part of the design to ensure the grain in the wood runs in the right direction on both arms and quite nicely done.
When I saw the advert photo, I was hoping that it might be boxwood, but it was obviously not once I had it in my hand.
My guess is the metal is tinned, probably steel.
I doubt that it has any great age.
A quick google showed something similar ( but not as elegant) is still made in India.
The elderly gentleman who I bought it from was born in India ( I looked at his facebook profile). I would have liked to have asked him about it, but he was obviously busy when I called.

I’ve decided that the metal is zinc sheet, it is clearly pressed into the wood as there are very shallow right angle edges (only 1mm deep) that act like a staple .
Andy’s comment about cm marks made me think, but looking closely they are actually halves, 4ths, 8ths, 16ths, 12ths, 6ths, 3rds and 2.3 rds

I would say sycamore forthe wood if it isn't box, I have seen lots of yard rules in sycamore.
