• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I’ve been on this forum for some time now, I tried to see on my profile when I joined but can’t seem to find it. But it’s several years. I also can’t find when I last posted, but it’s a long time ago.

I retired 7 years ago and determined that I would spend some time woodworking, and for a time I did, making the odd box, picture frame, repurposing the odd bookcase or table etc etc. My most satisfying achievement was converting my kitchen units from cupboards to drawers using Blum runners. So nothing particularly skilful, eg I can make a dovetail joint but it takes me ages and you could drive a bus through the gaps.

Now, I rarely make anything - but what I enjoy is lurking on this forum and seeing what other people have been up to, and being amazed at some of the truly mind blowing skill levels on display. Plus, the wide range of ages, life experiences, and knowledge of forum members (in all areas of life), makes this a really stimulating forum. And people express their opinions and share their knowledge, on whatever topic, courteously and respectfully (by and large😀), without the backbiting and offensiveness that you find on so many forums.

So to bring this ramble to a close, I’ve been feeling increasingly guilty about watching from the sidelines and not contributing and I want to change that. Hopefully I will have something to contribute, but don’t expect any WIPs of fine woodworking projects.

Jan 21 and Aug 7th 2018, I suspect that there are a whole lot of others who join and have never joined in at all but follow from the sidelines, yes it does seem to be better behaved but maybe that’s because we are a small band of brothers who don’t want to upset each other?
Please feel free to join in.

Although we like them there is no actual rule that says you have to post detailed photographic WIPs for everything you make.
Images of old projects would be equally well received too.

Welcome. Why don't you make things now? What can our little group do to motivate and encourage you? A

I might be entirely wrong, but I have a feeling that you might be the chap who read my house-renovation thread through from one end to the other in one go. If you weren't, I wouldn't recommend trying!

Anyway, welcome back Nick.

I did post a photo of a box I made. With a glaring mistake on the dovetail spacing. I’ll dig it out and repost.

I’m afraid I’m one of those people that takes up a hobby or interest and then moves on to something else. I’ve always been a keen photographer (reflected in my profile picture) and also go out walking and birdwatching. Perhaps I’d rather be outside than stuck in my tiny ‘workshop’ at the top of the house. And three grandkids have arrived since I retired. But poor excuses I know, so thanks for the encouragement.

Thank you Mike. I did indeed follow your thread from start to finish but not in one go! Truly inspiring and fascinating.

Hi Nick and welcome back. I remember your name and I'm pretty sure we had a conversation. I'm just north of Morpeth.

Welcome back Nick. I'm a bit like you; Life has been chaotic since I retired in 2016 and it's only now I'm starting to make headway and consider wee projects.
I'm just up the road from Lons, in Alnwick.
