• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Hi all, I'm slowly equipping myself with the tools to restart my love of woodwork.

We've got a detached garage which is aiming to become the workshop. First problem I need to overcome is a terrible mould issue, any wood left in there for a few months gets covered in a green mould.

I can't see a dpc in the walls, and the ground level around it is higher than the interior floor, so how to I get this dried out?

Damp proofing seems like a dark art to me, so any advice would be massively appreciated!

I'm presuming this is caused by damp

There seems to be DPC but it's below the adjacent ground hence it's not working. You will have to dig a channel adjacent to the walls and lower the ground to give at least 150mm clearance. To do a proper job excavate it deeper and fill with shingle keeping it 150 below the DPC

My workshop is a brick built single garage. There is a damp course but that doesn't stop the single brick skin getting soaked when it rains and some moisture soaks through.

I lined the walls and floor with polythene damp proof membrane. the floor is covered with tongue and groove 8 x 2 moisture resistant chipboard floor panels. On the walls I fixed 2 x 1 " battens every 16" vertically over the polythene. In between I filled in with 1" polystyrene insulation. The whole lot was then covered with 9mm plywood. So I have plywood walls over the entire inside which makes fixing things to walls very easy.

Sorting your damp course properly by digging outside is a good idea but it may not cure the problem completely.

I don't have any damp or mould problems and bare metal does not go rusty so my solution around 15 years ago worked for me at least.
 
Thanks both, and Robert your solution sounds like the way I may need to go, as digging out would be a bit of a nightmare (oil tanks and concrete paths in the way)
