• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

The well greased slope of ill repute has struck again! I scan through the CHT site fairly regularly and just before Christmas I spotted an old, British Racing Green, second hand Clifton No.6 which appeared, according to the info to be in excellent condition. It's fair to say that I lusted after it and decided to hit the 'buy now' button on the pooter. It's just been delivered:

Apart from a couple of very minor dings on the corners of the sole, there's no sign of any wear whatsoever. I was somewhat surprised to see that the original, hand forged O1 iron appears to have never been honed! Who ever had this beast for umpteen years looked after it but didn't use it so it's effectively brand new or as near as makes no difference - Rob
 
Lovely piece of kit Rob.

My "go to plane" is a Clifton 5 1/2. I'd be interested to hear how you find the two piece cap iron - some don't like it but I find it works fine for what I need.

For a plane of this quality I was amazed at the very reasonable price at CHT (inc free delivery). Certainly a lot less that the cost of a new (and some would say inferior) new one

I came across the two piece cap iron years ago and thought then that they were a total wast of time. However, time n'tide move on and having seen a clip from WH where Mat explains the benefits I'm open minded and prepared to give them another shot.

The Cliffie also the same length as my Norris A1 panel plane but with considerable more 'heft' - Rob
 
You've got a no. 6 already, Rob. What are you going to do with it?
 
Out of similar curiosity, I bought a Clifton two piece cap iron for my Stanley 4 1/2, probably about 15 years ago. I've used it happily ever since. I'd say it makes me just a bit more inclined to stop and sharpen when I need to, instead of half an hour later, and that's a Good Thing.

It will get used, fear not, but it's far too drool worthy to be used a door stop, even in the late Bob 9f's 'shop. I've had a look at the sole again, which is almost mirror polished and there are absolutely no wear scratches of any sort. As far as I can ascertain, it's never been used as intended- Rob

Very heavy; a full 4Kgs so much weightier than a comparable Stanley or Record

Quite a lot of my planes sit idle under the bench Mike, but this one won't. I've just honed and stropped the cutter and it's clear that it's never been sharpened as the original, very, very fine grinding lines are still there on the underside, right up to the edge. No evidence of flattening (its flat anyway) or polishing on a stone but in fitting the front section section of the cap iron I nicked a finger so it's drawn blood on it's first day! I've forgotten just how sharp O1 steel gets after it's been stropped! - Rob

I'm asking about your old one. Your existing no.6. NOT this new (old) Clifton.
 
Very nice plane Rob. The extra heft comes in very useful. I have the No7 and it is a joy to use when necessary.

I don't have an old No.6; my (no longer used) infill Norris A1 panel plane happens, by a mere coincidence to be the same length. I used the Norris for quite a few years before switching to the Veritas low angle family of planes - Rob
