• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I saw this saw on eBay and I was wondering if anyone could identify the brand, looks like a smiling sun on the etching?

Good grief, what is that abomination meant to be?!

I don't recognise the Good Temper and sun mark. It has a sort of cheap 20th century look about it, maybe.
 
It turns out to be from William Hunt and Sons - The Brades. See bottom left on this 1951 catalogue

says it was registered in 1889 but is now "dead".

Your picture looks slightly different - possibly later. I wonder if it was revived after Brades were absorbed into the Spear & Jackson/Eclipse/James Neill conglomerate in the last gasp of UK mass manufacture of hand tools.

It's a handsaw owl tea towel holder, obviously!

It's still a decent saw decommissioned for life, but I feel a little better that it might not be a highly desirable one that's been butchered. A bit like cutting a Norris plane in half to make bookends, or something else nonsensical.

Here's another nice-looking quality saw, but unfortunately someone's painted it.

Luckily one saw nut and a few minutes with a scraper and some sand paper and that saw is fixed. The owl-thingy is beyond redemption, I think.
