• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I bought a new to me iphone 5s the otherday as my faithful 3gs would not take the newer IOS versions to support the Apps I use.

I was initially alarmed by low battery duration of less than a day - it came with 9.3.3

Then I saw there was an upgrade to 9.3.4 and since then, the battery is lasting much longer. eg came off the charger 7am and is showing 75% left at 18.30 much like my 3GS used to.

Has anyone made the OS change and noticed a difference in battery life?

I know it's English: I recognise some of the words. Is this some sort of coded message to your MI5 handlers, perhaps?
 
I'm on 9.3.3 on a 5S, but I don'y have it set up for many apps. And my battery lasts 3 or 4 days.

I've only just upgraded to 9.3.3!

My dad used service the 706L when he was in the G.P.O.! (At least I think that's what it was called)
 
I think so - I noticed yesterday and today when I put it on charge overnight it was reading 75% both times - often before it was down to 50%.
I may have used it less during the day though?
Will check again tomorrow.

9.3.4 came out within days of 9.3.3. Billed as a security update but clearly there was something wrong with ver 9.3.3 if they changed it so quickly.
Only have just got the 5s on Tuesday, I did not what to expect for battery duration and on the first day it was on a lot whilst transferring data between the 3GS and the 5S, migrating to a nano SIM and working out how to get it to behave the way I wanted. The following day or two I used it a lot less and yet was feeling the need to charge it by 6pm as it was down to about 20%.
All of this was without making any calls.

It is also possible that the battery capacity might be low as it previously had not been used for several months by the previous owner and a few charge/discharge cycles had "woken it up". Lithium Ion is not supposed to have a memory effect as displayed by some early NiCd cells but these days there is software between the battery and the user so who knows.

I do have a Safari password question but will post that separately.

I'm not sure how long an L-ion battery is supposed to last, but I think it should be a few years. But these batteries are gel and don't have rigid cases, and when they begin to fail, they expand on charging which used to create the tell-tale cracks on the plastic cases of the old 3GS.

I have a place in Exeter which will replace the battery for about £25. There must be the places that can do that.

I bought my 3GS used 4 years ago and it still holds charge for a full day of moderate use. It was only the situation with IOS6 and apples refusal to support old apps that more or less forced the change for me.

Battery replacement is a careful diy job but there is a risk of cracking the screen. £25 is pretty good compared the legit Apple store rates I've seen.
Don't be tempted by the so called double capacity batteries advertised on ebay and the like. They are just gold labels stuck onto old, possibly used, standard batteries. You just can't get more Ah into that volume.

The 5s is a new one on contract and so I have a few years left with that. The chap in Exeter has good recommendations and I wouldn't try a diy job myself.

Oops I have a confession - I was only on 3 - didn't realise another upgrade had come out as I'd only upgraded the other day!
Now on 4 so will see if any difference.
I started counting my Apps but got fed up as I must have about 300 on the phone 64Gb.
You know that to completely close down Apps - double click the Home Button, all the "open" Apps will appear which can then be flicked off.
That will save a bit of battery.
My wife is using my old 4 which must be 4yrs old now but still going strong.

No I did not! thanks Rod. That seems a big difference from IOS6 where previous apps seem to close when you went to another one. Seems that stuff is open from days ago. Do you really have to do "maintenance" and go round closing everything on a regular basis??
I don't use a lot of apps 2.8GB used 23.4GB free
Be interesting if it could display the current drawn profile to help learn what to do to minimise power. Bit like using the car computer to find optimum speed/gear/driving style. For example on my Cmax, 6th gear is only the best choice over 70MPH

They don't close down completely but go into a sleep mode so still taking a tiny amount of current.
There is an App called System Status - Activity Monitor but I've never tried it.

My Garmin Stat Nav is very power hungry but I always plug it into the car when driving.

Rob, are you checking the battery usage tool to see which apps are using most battery? I don't have an iPhone but have an iPad and iPlod both running 9.3.4. I also close all apps after use and close wifi and bluetooth when not needed. Screen brightness will also drain battery very fast, try reducing it especially at night.
 
I find that turning on Location on my Android drains the battery a lot.

Erm I think the auto brightness function draws more power by day than at night if you think about it. :lol:
However you are absolutely correct that screen brightness generally is a battery killer. My slider is set to about 20% currently
Certainly for my use I want the wifi on all the time as that is how it stops running up bills for 3G/4G data access.
I never use bluetooth anyway - not sure in a phone context what it brings to the party in normal use.
Home automation I suppose? but a lot of that is wifi anyway.

Rod's earlier point (and Roger's) about GPS is very relevant. GPS systems have to receive very very low power signals from the satellites only a few dB about the noise floor. The receivers have to use power to get a low noise figure. Then there is quite lot of data processing to do as well which also takes power.
In the game to save power make sure any location aware services shut down the GPS a few seconds after you close them. check for the absence of the little arrow at the top of the screen.

I set location services to off or only when using the App - things like Good Pub Guide etc.
Blue tooth connects to my car hands free and relays Sat Nav instructions if switched on.
Also controls Sonus and can transmit to speakers and control some camera features.
Also links to Air Play so I can communicate with other devices and using my Apple TV ( which is a box and not a TV) I can stream photos, videos etc from my phone.
