• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi everybody, having just retired now got more time for hobbies, so setting up a 40m2 wood workshop, so a lot to learn, and lots of inspiration from YouTube, some good, some frightening, Health and safety not available in all countries :o . :obscene-drinkingcheers:
 
Hi Woodentop and welcome from NW France.

How do you get on sourcing tools, woods, finishes etc here. I still find it much cheaper to source in the UK. As I travel frequently this is not too much of a burden.
 
Thanks for your welcome, sourcing wood is a problem that I have already come across, there is one firm but limited to about seven species, there are a lot of places that sell "Pen" blanks in every type of wood you can imagine, but not for me. I have a fair supply of Oak/Sweet Chestnut/Pear/Apple and Cherry, all of which I have felled and stacked, but getting some Maple/Purpleheart/Beech and Walnut, I am as my name suggests new to wood, so have stared small ie Walking stick handles and in the next week when the new planer arrives will start on two chopping boards and a cheese board with the help of this website "Cuttingboarddesigner.com" Of course will get some pics.
 
You tube is good for chopping board ideas but with the proviso that not all youtubers undertake safe working precautions so use them for pattern ideas but develop your own methods within your capabilities and machinery available.

Being in the medical profession for twenty year have seen my fair share of mishaps :o I know my very limited ability at school in my days we had a choice metalwork or woodwork, not many cars about made of wood :shock: so did metalwork then spent most of my life working with metal, hence the change, but hope to incorporate wood and metal together in some of the projects, as I get my confidence up.
