Occasional woodworker here. I enjoy building furniture from timber milled by my Alaskan mill.

I like my machines:

Triton thicknesser
Multico K mortiser
Startrite TA 165 table saw
Charnwood spindle moulder

... but started out with the usual motley collection of hand tools.

I’ve not had the luxury of an alaskan mill but I am waiting for my own lumber to season before I make it into something useful. I took my logs to a local mill who did the hard work for me.

An Alaskan Mill is exactly what you need, I've been to Inverness in the winter and also Alaska, Inverness was colder :shock:

As above, an Alaskan mill is a guide jig for using a chainsaw to plank up trees. I use a Husky 365 with a 30” bar and ripping chain. Hard work, but I must say I’ve never felt unsafe doing it.



Wadkin. Originally a DC machine - 350kg of cast iron that has every practical type cooing over it for hours.

Welcome guineafowl, straight in with some pictures that’s what I like to see, I think I might be joining you in front of the headmasters desk, always hated the word lumber but recently I’ve come to understand it is used here in the UK but only when it applies to trees and first cuts, or so I believe.Ian
Just heading off to find an example. This is a yard near me and this is their description online so they are timber merchants with a lumberyard, i’m going to give them a call tomorrow to see how they define it!

Larch for the dresser and coffee table, beech for the little table. Both trees were leaning heavily, so displayed interesting behaviour when worked - reaction wood.
