Hi everyone
My name is Gavin and I live in North Staffs. I am a long time lurker from the original Woodhaven and only stumbled across this sequel a few weeks ago. Following a suggestion I thought I would say 'hello'.
I'm just in the process of changing my workshop around, installing new cabinets for storage and a whole new dust extraction system. Also I'm going to be setting up and fettling my new (to me) table saw, a Scheppach TS250ci.
I like turning and making generally smaller items although I am looking at making some mission style furniture for myself in the future once my workshop is properly set up again. I will try to post a couple of examples once I am allowed to post images.
Even though I haven't posted before I am in awe of the expertise and friendliness of the people here, there is a wealth of great information and advice - so thank you in advance for that.

Cheers Bob - thanks for looking into that for me - I was trying Amazon Prime photos for the first time so I think the way they share might be the problem... or the way I was using it might have been the problem... as Robert has identified since I started this post... shame I teach IT for a living!!

Using postimage.org seems to be working...

So here is the bottle stopper I mentioned above:






Not sure about the wood as I was given it but some other woodworkers have suggested it looks like yew. Simple fricition polish finish. It was the first piece of real turning I had done, and creeping up to the right diameter on the top to accept the coin was rather painstaking and nerve-wracking!

And a cat intarsia from a pattern in a popular intarsia book:



And finally for now a Bowie knife I made for my father when he retired and emigrated to Uruguay a few years ago.



The wood is lapacho (from Uruguay courtesy of my mother's suitcase when she returned for a visit) also known variously as Ipe or Brazilian Walnut...

I don't know the technical terms for measuring hardness in wood but it is very tough and heavy going. It leaves a green/yellow dust all over your tools - and has a floral scent when cut that you really don't want to be breathing in I would imagine!

I bought the blade from a Sheffield company but made the hilt and the stand myself. The Spanish name relates to how my father thinks he is seen by the locals - the 'Crazy Englishman'.

Nice knife - can they carry such a beast over there?
I started making a few knives but I got pulled up entering the House of Commons carrying a tiny knife on my key ring. It was a lock knife only 15mm long which I'd completely forgot about.
Put me off knives after that [emoji3]

HI Gavin. Just joined myself today, so not got into this forum as yet. I've been with UKW for a while now and it's nice to find another area of interest.

Only been woodworking for under two years but having great fun building bandsaw boxes in the garage/workshop and not a 'real' carpenter, but enjoying retirement with this. www.badgerwoodcrafters.co.uk

Just improved the dust filtration as I was having problems with my asthma and needed to 'clean up' my act a little. Spent a lot at Axminster, but needs must sometimes.
