• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Good day

Not a woodworking subject as such, rather hoping to find someone with knowledge of antique furniture. Mum is going to be downsizing in near future. Majority of her furniture will have to go. Most is just local auction fodder but she has a couple of pieces that may warrant a bit more effort.

First is an oak Holland and Sons linen press in the arts and crafts style ( from what i understand) its really quite a nice piece but big.

Apologies for orientation i reasly do struggle with an ipad.

Second she has a set of 6 oak dining chairs , these date from about 1900 ( as relayed to my parents by the old lady they bought them from in the early 60’s) they are by either Waring or Gillow , but unfortunately a less than honest upholsterer claimed they’d “ mislaid” the bone makers plates when they were recovered.

When the house goes up for sale , any eventual purchaser will have the first refusal on any of the current furniture, an idea of a fair value would be appreciated , assuming they have any.

Many thanks phil

Phil, I am not sure what the second hand furniture market is like in the UK, or auction prices.
In RSA you tend to get pennies and then they resell with a hefty mark up.

Have a look at auction places and second hand shops for prices.

My 2 bits.

Mmm.

Interesting. I’ve been told for a long time that the ‘brown furniture’ market is dieing on its proverbial brown fundament.

But Lyon and Turnbull (my local auction house to the gentry in the ‘burgh – we don’t go to the sales at Christies &c. Euro trash and Londoners. No offence to any one …) are still pushing out stuff at prices from a decade or so ago.

Best bet – Local posh peoples’ auction house. There must be a few down there.

Mind you, if you weren’t in Kent I’d buy that press in a moment. Even from that photo' (tricky to do without a wide angle lens, which brings its own problems, I know).

Chairs… Not so exciting, for me anyway.

I agree that the press could fetch good money if it’s marketed to the right demographic.
Can you diy, as auction houses are going to cost nearly 40% of the price that the buyer pays.
Buyer and seller premiums plus vat.

The linen press (if indeed it is that) looks far too big to fit most houses. That will very much depress value as will the style of drawers.

(I have been buying a bit of Georgian walnut cabinetry and so on lately, so am price familiar).

Retail by a proper dealer in Kent may not be more than £600 to £700 as an asking price that would be subject to discount and auction or eBay far less than that. Moving cost is also a price depressant for most.

I may be interested myself if you want to PM me as I have a utility room with sufficient height that I have yet to fit out. Would need dimensions though.

Much W&G genuine stuff will have been stamped as well as having the nailed labels. The value lies in early Gillows (not W&G) furniture, especially if it is in the pattern books. If you cannot prove the W&G provenance then these chairs will be £20 each at most to a dealer currently. There are a lot of chairs about.

Lurker!!!

I don't have wings. I have a semi derelict building site.

Many thanks for the replies.

The chairs have no stamped marks of any sort i can find.

The linen press , hopefully the eventual buyer of the house will be interested, it fits where it is perfectly. And as pointed out transport is costly on relatively low value items.

All the best
