• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How many horses are in my motor?

I bought this motor years ago and then never used it. But I want to use it now. There is no motor plate on it. How do I tell how many HP/watts it is? It’s bloody heavy. The cable out of the nvr is 1mm. There is then a proper gash join to what I think is 1.6mm cable (yellow!), which has a 16 amp plug on it. Whole cable needs replacing from the nvr.
I know what I was told it was hp wise, how do I confirm?
Thanks
Mark

It's definitely somewhere between zero and four :eusa-think:

On a serious note, from my own experience, a dual capacitor motor like that is typically somewhere around 2.2KW/3HP but that doesn't mean much when my experience is quite narrow. Someone with a lot more knowledge with these things like Bob might be able to shine a light on how to ascertain the power of a motor without the tag.

Not easy without specialist equipment. You might get near by measuring the shaft diameter as it exits the motor housing* and the height of the shaft above the plane of the mounting feet. this in mm is called the frame size.

* sometime the diameter is reduced to fit the application but you need the larger diameter figure.

Using these two parameters look up in a motor catalogue to compare the power ratings. I looks like a blower and so almost certainly will be a 2pole motor.

I don't want to jump in to territory which really isn't mine, but what else do you know? Do you know the amperage it draws? Because I remember from O level physics that there is a direct ratio from volts and amps to horsepower.

No this is not correct Mike. your recall will only apply to DC circuits.

Would knowing what it is attached to give a rough indication to the motor size as I am sur you would not use a large motor on a hobby dust extractor for example

Thanks all
Bob, I think I might struggle to measure the diameter but probably can measure the frame size. I won't be able to do that until Monday now as I'm at work all weekend.
The motor is indeed off an extractor and I'll be using it and the impeller.
It was sold second hand as 3 hp (2200w) but when I dug it out today I was surprised at the lack of motor plate which I never realised before. I think its a charnwood and looking at their current offerings all their twin bag extractors (which this was off) are 3hp, though this is over 10 years old so that might not have been the case then. What made me start to wonder apart from the lack of a plate was the 1mm cable from the nvr thats been gashed to to the yellow 1.6mm and the 16amp plug. Looking at the connection at the back of the nvr I couldn't be sure if this was original or not but if original I'd not expect it to then be a 16amp machine at that cable size. Yes I'm mixing up my amps and HP.

Both halves of the cable needs to come off and a new one connected direct to the nvr.

E mail Charnwood.
Their technical folks are very helpful.
Use e mail rather than phone then they can deal with it when things are quiet.

Solved this question by accident you when I came across the rest of the extractor in a container
