• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How to hinge this?

I'm in the early stages of the mahjong box (WIP to follow) but pretty sure I've already screwed up the design process!

The intention was to use a couple of smart hinges on the lid but as I'm not including and 'lip' around the lid I can't see how I can get fixing screws in.

This is the set up:

The bottom 3 sections are the box body and the top is the lid (not the actual one but nearly size representative). At a fraction over 11mm I can't see how there will be enough meat to in the real lid to allow rebating and fixing. The only option I've come up with is epoxy and 'pretend' it's screwed by also gluing screw heads in as well.

Really don't want to increase the lid section (but not impossible) as that'll make it too chunky and don't want a lift off lid but rapidly coming to the conclusion that's the only option.

Any suggestions?

Nope, there won't be. 11mm is really, really tight for Smarthinges and you can just about get away with a 12mm thick side. I4mm is the minimum thickness I'd go for so I guess you'd have to consider some small brass butts which are a complete pita to fit - Rob

3mm brass insert drilled and tapped to accept the hinge screws.

Shaped fancy if you want to.

Or do an overlap at the back lid like my knot box.

Pete
Thanks Pete but I have neither the kit nor the skills to make inserts which sound like the ideal solution. Overlap and brass butts it is.

Yes Rob, I know how much of a pita they are!

Andy, not really what I’m looking for on this one but they might be an option to look at.

That's a very nice box Pete. Thankfully no sign of any resin!
