We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I can't stand misleading advertising.

That anyone buying the outriggers could see that they were different or some such. I was going to get back to them based on the What you see is what you get' but found I have deleted their reply! Can't be bothered to do any more TBH.

I received the acknowledgement from ASA with a link to go through the form process to make the official complaint. I still haven't done it yet :oops:

As Morse once said to Lewis... "Procrastination is a thief of time Lewis."

My frustration has since cooled down, but I shall get on with it 8-)

It is misleading and very naughty in my opinion. I would have thought there's a reg for a certain sized outrigger to match a certain height tower. A 5M tower needs to have larger outrigger - like in the top photo as you write. I don't think I would feel safe on a 5M tower with short outriggers. Shouldn't be allowed - it's a darn scandal. :x

You're damn right there. Plus when I rang to query the short outriggers I was stonewalled by the most unhelpful woman I have had the misfortune to deal with over the phone for a very long time. Apparently it was all my fault.

I didn't mention that at the same time I ordered an extra platform and pair of horizontal bars for added safety. They arrived without any of the fixings. I was told, again, that it was my fault. BPS Access Solutions really are a lousy company to deal with.
 
If you click the bottom right picture in the gallery the text with it says:

"NEW DIY Aluminium Scaffold Tower featuring adjustable outriggers (included on 6m & 7m towers / optional on 4m and 5m towers)"

Based on a quick scan I can't see anywhere that you can buy outriggers other than the ones you bought which I understand are not adjustable. If you can only buy the ones you did, this text is witout doubt misleading.

Not sure this helps, but based on this and the response to calls you have had I would not be putting much faith in their "Lifetime No Quibble Guarantee!"

Maybe a letter to Watchdog in the interests of warning others that these are dodgy people? Probably won't help you, but by way of revenge if the story were picked up it would give them a heap of pain. I suspect a safety angle would be most likely to get it taken up.

Weird one that Roger as I know you already had this and recommended it to me, and I now have the 5m one with the 2m extension which I bought later along with the outrigger kit, which is the adjustable one as you were looking for.

I agree though that I cannot see anywhere on the site that offers non adjustable outriggers...

PS just to add, I don't know whether they are bad or I was lucky but for transparency, I ordered the 5m and it came within three days all intact, then ordered the 2m and outriggers from them when I saw them at the Tatton show and got their show discount, and all that arrived within a week all intact.

Maybe you got them on a bad day Roger...?
 
I happened to see that Oak Furniture Land ad on the TV the other night and I see what Pinch is on about. Where is he, by the way?

On behalf of quality furniture makers everywhere, I too have lodged a complaint with the ASA.

I was hoping (still might yet) to pop into a branch this afternoon to go undercover. But, this depends on how productive I am in the shop today. Plus, I'm on cooking duties later as well. :eusa-think:

I haven't made it there today, but I could do with going to Toolstation tomorrow for a new bench mat and OF are on route. Trouble is, the closest one to me is about 15 miles away, but fear not... I will be going fully armed with my phone set to record.

I've had one of those funny old days today 8-)

As I was running a bit late with getting to work and I had to go to the workshop before the site, I decided to pop onto site first to let the people know I'll be about an hour as I had to go to the shop first - and the shop is only a few minutes away. But, nobody was there, so I went to the shop anyway and had a brew.

While I was there, I remembered I had to drop off the grandchildren's birthday presents during the coming week - they live 15 miles away. The original plan was to drop the prezzies off last Tuesday afternoon while I was working a Major Sharpy job which was just a few miles from the grandchildren. But, as the Major Sharpy job was a nightmare job, I didn't get the time to pop into my daughter's house afterall. So, the prezzies have been on the bus all week, and, the coming week was looking unlikely too. So... I was thinking hmmmmmm... I don't actually feel like working today, hmmmmmm instead, I'm going to drive to Poole to drop off the prezzies. I phoned Georgie (my daughter) and she was in - result! On route, I also thought I just as well drive a bit further to see my folks too - as I haven't seen them for about a month. So, I phoned these guys as well and another result - they were also in.

After an hour at Georgie's I started to drive to my folks house - about another 7 miles. On route and in traffic, I could see an Oak Furnitureland store ahead of me. Excellent - let's get in there!!

Straight off the cuff, I drove into the car park, parked my bus and walked into the store with my phone set to 'record' - just the job. I was greated by a salesman straight away offering me coffee and biscuits. The conversation then started... The only problem is - Does anyone know how I can upload the recording from my phone, onto my PC and then onto the forum? I've been trying research how to do it, but none the wiser.... Help!!
 
Can you transfer photos OK from your phone? Then once you've located the sound file on your phone, you should be able to upload it to your PC in a similar fashion.

Is it an Android phone? What app did you use ? Do you know where the sound file is located as a start?
 
Cheers Roger, I think I may have sussed it. I emailed the recording as an attachment to myself from my phone. I then opened the email on the PC and tried to download this way, but there was an error - saying the file is unsupported. Another option was to open it in a browser, which is what I did and just the job. I then copied the address from the browser, closed the window, sent another email to myself with the pasted link. Opened this email and I could click on the link, taking me to the recording.

To recap, I changed plans today and drove to Bournemouth. On route, I noticed an Oak Furnitureland store, so without hesitating, I went in.

After walking about 10 steps into the store, I was greeted by a salesman who offered me coffee while I browsed - yeah right! He was then on the case straight away, showing me their reduced prices. As he began to walk away to let me browse, he looked at me and said "There's no veneer in 'ere." :lol: :lol: The conversation then started.

The salesman said some rubbish (naturally), but much of what he said made sense. This was the first time I've really looked at their furniture with a close eye and at their prices, the furniture is actually a very good deal for the customer. But, this was never an issue for me, the issue was advertising 'solid oak' and the veneer thing.

My professional opinion: OF advertise their drawer bases and cabinet backs as solid oak - and they are, albeit engineered. The main bulk of the oak is solid. I looked at several pieces of furniture and yes, I could see a few lengths of their oak consisted of 2-3 different pieces, but much of it appeared to be one solid piece. The salesman agreed and said their furniture is 'engineered oak to a degree'. But why so cheap? That's because they buy their oak worldwide and it's made in China - he was reluctant to admit this. But yes, made in China!! :lol:

My conclusion and this pains me: For the prices, Oak Furnitureland's furniture is good value for money.

PS: I've been thinking more about this whole OF and their 'misleading advertising' since writing the above, and, as a complaints case, what is there?

Now I've seen their furniture properly in the flesh, I believe they are misleading the consumer to a degree. Is it solid oak? The short answer that is 'yes'. Although some of it is 'engineered' as the salesman agreed, or in other words, oak joined together, but it's still solid oak. I find the veneer thing the most irritating part, but, my irritation was that I felt OF was rubbishing veneer suggesting it's cheap and nasty. The salesman's interpretation was different to mine. He made mention that damaging the veneer is more detrimental to damaging solid wood, and he's right. A small dent in solid wood is more easily repairable than a small dent in veneer.

On reflection of my visit to the store and listening to the recording a few times now, I could have done a better job, but I didn't want to rehearse a script, I just wanted to go in and play act off-the-cuff. I asked everything I wanted to and I could have raised more questions during the conversation, like the wardrobe door construction for example. I could have easily said - "you should know, you're the salesman." But, what's the point in saying that. I could already see their furniture is actually very good for the money.

So, what do we have... pretty much solid oak furniture made in China (most retail furniture is these days including DFS, SCS, Harveys etc) by machines operated by people. The oak is source from all around the world and OF has a write-up on their website about this.

The only two things I see which could possibly put people off buying their furniture is the fact it's made in China and using 'engineered oak' terminology instead of 'solid oak'. But even then, would this put people off? Probably not. Not forgetting, OF are geared up for the mass market. Most of my clients for example, wouldn't even consider buying from OF.

As I started this thread and there have been some great comments and efforts made from fellow colleagues (especially Roger), I would like to say Thank You chaps! It has been worth it and I'm not retracting from my intro post, but I can now see OF is providing value for money and people generally love the look and feel of their furniture.

I now gracefully accept my 'Play Acting Reward' with thanks to my agent and team of colleagues, my wife and dogs for showing such wonderful support, my fleet of vehicles for being so sexy, my family for being there and last but not least, my pint glass always tendered well and recharged by my nanny - Thank You.

So if you are looking for something better than veneered chipboard rubbish, no need to pay the crazy prices of bespoke makers, come to OF, as Wood Monkey Workshop say "their furniture is actually very good for the money."

I thought I was the cheeky monkey! I think you take the banana this time! :lol:

Now, I'm not entirely sure that's 100% correct dear fellow. Is all I'm saying, after looking at their furniture and at the prices they have on offer, it's a pretty good service OF are providing to the general mass market public. Believe me, I wish I walked in that store yesterday and the salesman gave me a load of lies. I wish the drawer bases and cabinet backs were not solid oak, but they are. I wish all the components were engineered, but the main structure components of their furniture appears to be one piece. The only real strong hold I had was where their stuff is made, and he reluctantly told me after I pressured him. Now, they don't mention this on their website, apart from the furniture being made overseas. The two main points for a case are; the salesman agreed the furniture is partly 'engineered oak' and the stuff is made in China.

I wouldn't label their stuff as superior though (as Roger found on their website), but it isn't rubbish either. I wish it was - truly I do. The fundamental fact is - for the money, it's good value. I'm not on their side by any means, I'm just being real and honest.

When I was in my late teens I developed the habit of starting almost every sentence with "As I said...". That was until somebody pointed out to me that I had used that intro when I spoke to a complete stranger for the very first time. The embarrassment seemed to shock me out of the habit.

Well, as I said, oh right okay.

I'm not embarrassed though, it's straight over the top of my head. I'm really not that bothered. We all have our funny twinky bits. I probably have too many of them.

I remember a colleague years ago who used to say the word 'obviously' an awful lot - every sentence contained the word 'obviously'.

The ones I don't like that much are 'basically' and in more recent times, young people are starting their sentences with the word 'so'.... "So, I went to the shops...."

"Hey Tim, what do you do for a living?"

"So, I'm an IT Consultant and I work in an office full of IT people."

"Oh right okay, and do you have any hobbies Tim?"

"So, I play with my playstation when I'm not watching Magic Roundabout."

"Oh I see, okay, and what doe your girlfriend do?"

"So, she's a nurd, she's awlays playing with her bluetack."

"Oh right okay - eh... bluetack Tim?"

"So, yeah, like, so, well basically, so, I'm an irritating individual."

yeah yeah yeah..........
