• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I think I have enough clamps ...

Should I be worried?

I'm waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of you Rob. I've got enough tools. I have had for years.

Well .... I can't remember the last time I thought ... oh! if I just had another clamp. I always seem to have enough.

I saw another advertisement for clamps and that reminded me of the cliche along the lines of "How many clamps do you need? One more than you have. It's seems to be trope that you can never have enough clamps ... but I think I do have enough. Is the trope just a sale ploy?

As someone is bound to ask, I've done a quick count. I have
  • 4 x 30 cm one hand clamps
  • 4 x 45 cm one hand clamps
  • 6 x 80 cm one hand clamps
  • 12 x 140+ cm sash clamps
  • 2 x 70 cm F clamps
  • 4 x 40 cm F clamps
And a variety of smaller clamps.

To be honest the 14 one hand clamps cover the vast majority of clamping work for me. I've occasionally needed to get the sash clamps out.

I think the amount and size of clamps you need will always depend on your intended project. If you have enough you are a lucky man.

I have a couple of Record sash cramp extension bars which means the longest length I can pull together is around 3m - Rob

I remember reading an article on boatbuilding in the woodworking press some 35 years ago - I did brief pricing job on the cramps being used in the picture shown - current pricing at the time, £6,800.

That's a good point and an important consideration for a lot of woodworkers.

I don't think I mentioned the cost of the clamps in my build thread. For the antiques I bought, I think the hammer price was £14 for the one large straight one and the two smaller ones, one of which had the wonky bar.
The bits of wood and brass I used are just the sort of thing that accumulates over the decades, I don't think I actually paid any money for any of them.

Must admit to meaning to build some of these clamps but have not got round to it. Even purchased the plans and pins.

I believe a certain Steve Maskery esq. of this parish produced a very decent method of building those some years ago; I made one from maple about 600mm long - Rob
