Is it just me or do others get hacked off with lazy postings? It seems to me that some folk just bash out any old crap on the keyboard but can't be bothered to (a) use capital letters where appropriate; (b) use punctuation; (c) not bother to spell-check or (d) use many other slapdash, highly irritating habits.

I accept that some folk may be dyslexic or have other issues that make it difficult for them to post using the Queens English but I suspect that they are in the minority.

It's not so much here but there are some posters on UKW who strive to make an art form of it. :evil:

Many people, I think, are so used to SMS Text speak that they forget to how to write properly. The use of smaller keyboards on smart phones and tablets also helps to increase the problem.

I must admit to suffering when my brain often works faster than my fingers can type. I can preview my post and re-read it several times and still not see the errors until after posting.

I totally agree - let's keep the English language as it is (or was) before the evolving process gets too fast.

I must admit, I've wondered whether I'm dyslexic for many reasons.

I can type reasonably fast for a blokey (been typing for years) but my spelling is awful - although better to what it was. I also send a text message using the proper English language.

My wife's grammar is awful and she's an ex grammar school girl. It's just laziness. She rarely uses punctuation marks (including full stops!) and I find it difficult to read. You have to almost decipher the paragraph to make any sense of it. Damn annoying!

I think the way a lot of people write is a testament to the speed up of society. Everyone seems to be in a rush these days with little thought or effort to what they're doing. Why? I don't get it. And for what? We're all on the same path and heading in the same direction - eventually. Every part of life should be a journey including writing a post on a woodworking forum.

I've been doing a bit of eBay stuff recently and oh boy... some of the listing descriptions are appalling.

I'm nowhere near perfect of course (although Mrs P might think so ), but I do recognise the simple fundamentals of time, life and our beautiful language - so there!

You missed the apostrophe in the Queen's English. I also suspect there should be a colon at the start of the list of points and you have missed the final semi-colon between items (c) and (d) in your list. :lol:

Not everyone visits all three forums, Peter. I think that is the reason why some folk will post on all three although I agree it can be a bit frustrating. If I reply then I'll do it just on one forum. Occasionally another if the other replies warrant it.

Roger, my first reaction is - increase the medication! :lol:

I agree with you, it is annoying when people cannot spell and use proper diction.
As for text-talking, the less said the better.

English is not my home language, so I need to be far more diligent when writing and spelling.

Just kidding, I'm a fellow sufferer. I think you could extrapolate (in extremis, granted) to a general decrease in standards and a rush toward the slap-dash. Perhaps it's a function of the immediacy of modern communication?

I think that just an excuse that people have heard and now claim that's the reason when really it's just laziness.

No matter how much of a rush I'm in, if I make a typo at notice a grammatical error then I go back and fix it (obviously everyone misses some every now and then).

Smartphone's tiny keyboards don't help but proof reading before sending is always available to everyone...

Probably easier to jump on a bandwagon than take a minute extra. I have spotted some mistakes I have made on here lately, silly things like '/i' instead of 'I' where I missed the shift key, so I am as guilt as most if not more so.

I was also chatting to a friend recently about the seeming increase of verbal 'ticks' such as 'I was like, he was like, errr, you know, etc.

He said, "I'm sure if you paused for a moment to gather your thoughts and spoke with clarity, it would be better received than just gabbling on to fill the silence" I agree and it's something I consciously try to do.

b. I'm on 4 lists, and only a regular on two--and the other one has a different focus, so there's no duplication. If you need a quick answer, spreading the question around is good. But really, different lists have different subject matter and attitude, so picking the best list for the post and posting only once until a decent time has passed is a good practice in my mind. I mean, if I'm looking for a good deal on 220 grit sanding belts for a 3x21 sander, I shouldn't post it here or on OWWM, I should post it on Sawmill Creek.
