The apparent misspelling of 'rain' is not a misspelling as I'm referring to REIN. Repetitive Electrical Induced Noise.

Our broadband signal has been gradually deteriorating culminating in yesterday it constantly dropping to the point of uselessness. Until then I'd been oblivious to this but after talking to the excellent tech guys at Zen, I tuned my radio to 612KHz to listen out for it and to try and determine what in our house (if it was in our house) was causing it. Definite interference. Switched off our circuit breakers one by one until it went. The workshop. The Apple switched-mode power supply feeding my laptop. Unplugged it. Interference on the radio went. Broadband seemed to be OK.

Or so I thought. Then the broadband started playing up again.

Long story short. I had everything turned off in the house with the exception of the router and you could still see the ADSL line dropping with monotonous regularity.

Back to Zen who adjusted the S/N ratio down from 6dB to 3dB. About an hour, after the change propagated its way through to the right bit of equipment, the line seemed to stabilise OK. So that's all good then.

Well, no, as I just checked to see how long our line has been up. It should be in hours. 47 minutes. Which means that the REIN has to be coming from outside our property. Oh joy.

NB Have swapped out microfilter, router, ADSL cable between the two and plugged into the BT test socket

Pants. It's now that you realise just how much you rely on it.
 
Roger, are Zen any good as a broadband supplier? I've had it with BT and their shocking customer service and all the stuff I have researched says the likes of Sky and Virgin are just as bad but Zen are the best rated by Which? So am considering them.

YES! YES! YES! Zen regularly come top of the customer service lists/polls and well deservedly so. They might not be the cheapest but I'm a great believer in 'You get what you pay for'.

I wholeheartedly recommend them. They really are head and shoulders above the rest. We even swapped our BT line rental over to them.

Where Zen score, I think, is on several levels. Firstly, the support is UK based. Secondly, all their support people are effectively Level 2. At many other ISPs, when you ring customer support, you get Level 1 which is usually some numpty and you then spend many fruitless hours getting nowhere.

To give you an example, my tricky connection problem. The guy I was speaking to yesterday and who was helping me diagnose the problems took it upon himself this morning to go in to the logs and check to see what our status was. He picked up on the fact that I'd spoken to another guy, what we'd discussed etc. He then sent me a copy of the connection logs which are timed showing the outages to help me try and pinpoint the problem and to see if it could tie in to anything else happening. I call that 'Above and Beyond'.

That's a great endorsement! BT call centers are a real bugbear of mine, currently our broadband keeps dropping out and they believe the issue is my router and this needs replacing for £40 or since I am now out of contract I can sign up again and they can send it to me for free. Fine except last May the exact same symptoms exact same solution and, coincidentally (!), I was just out of contract then as well so buy new router or re-sign for another 12 month contract.

Don't believe in coincidences like that, and their complaints department and customer service has been poor at best. So I will vote with my feet.

I agree you get what you pay for, I bank with first direct. When you call them the phone is answered by someone based in uk who can deal immediately with your query. No automated menus etc.

If it is REIN causing (or adding to) your problems, it could be induced anywhere on the copper circuit. I had problems with dropouts when I was in rural Devon. I suspected ancient farming equipment starting up.

Get Openreach out to test it and don't forget to report the intermittent clicks and noise that you get on the phone connection.

A final thought. Do you have a TT earthing system with a local ground spike or spikes? If the 'broadband signal has been gradually deteriorating , might your local earth be slowly going high resisance due to the dry weather? Try giving it a good soaking. It's a shot in the dark, but can't do any harm.

Well, I struck gold with the Openreach guy. One of the old school and still very much into going the 'extra distance'. Initial tests were fine. He had a handy gizmo that would pick up high-resistance joints and the rough distance away but this found nothing. He did mention that in the 2007 floods, the cabinet feeding us and several hundred other subscribers was almost under water and that inside all the connections and wires were corroded. The field engineers wanted to replace the cabinet but management said 'No...not enough faults being reported'. Hmmmmph!

The line passed all its normal tests and I was starting to get a bit concerned. Had my fault-finding logic failed ? Was it something inside the house? I didn't think so but if it was then a hefty bill would be coming my way.

He tried various voltage tests and other line tests. Nada.

Then he connected up his ADSL test gizmo. Initial tests were 'A OK'....oh, dear....££££££ :cry:

But then bingo, the page that tests errors and in particular CRC faults threw up several hundred CRC faults in a matter of minutes. More than enough to make the line drop. So off he toddled to the cabinet to see if the CRC faults were still there when he tested back my line to the exchange. He remade some joints but couldn't see any errors from the cabinet back to the exchange so it was question of following the line back, checking any connection points en route, remaking joints etc. In the end he threw in replacing our line from the cabinet to the exchange with a spare for good measure. Back to the house, CRC faults gone. Bingo.

So fingers crossed.
 
Pants!

Just got a call from Zen who were monitoring our line to check it had been repaired. Apparently, there are still errors - I was aware the line had dropped once. Hey ho..

So Zen are passing it back to Openreach. Bizarre...because I saw with my own eyes that the CRC errors were only 2 or 3. There be gremlins in that box.

Deejay...how can I tell if I'm on a TT supply ? We are on overhead wires, the neutral of the secondary of the transformer is connected to an earth spike at the pole. And at the house, the neutral is also bonded to an earth spike.

I'm not a spark, but I looked into this when I had problems in Devon. The reason I asked if you were on a TT system is because it makes things more prone to electro-magnetic interference, if memory serves me well. I'll try and find a reference.

If the incoming neutral is bonded to an earth spike at your house, it would appear to be a TN -CS system, as Bob suggested.

TT uses two separate earths. One goes on the neutral at the supply end and the other is connected to the installation at the customer's end. If the separate earths are at differing potentials it can cause problems with telecomm's kit. The connection between the earth spike at the house and the earthed incoming neutral should prevent this, but if the local earth is HR it may not. I'd water the local earth, just out of curiosity to see if it helps.

Good news about Openreach. I got a similar response. The tech was there for most of the day and I doubled my data rate to a whole 2 Mbit/s. I was four miles from the exchange.

If you are still getting drop outs, can you see Errored Seconds in your router stats? I just looked at mine . On a 12 Mbit/s path in five days, 9000 CRC errors and 6000 Errored Seconds, which implies that the errors are trickling in. You may also be able to see Seriously Errored Seconds, which would give you a clue if they are coming in in a few bursts.

These things can take a long time to resolve. Stick with it.

Aren't they the same ?

I can't see Errored Seconds unfortunately in my router stats...a Netgear D6000. Which router are you using ?

Theoretically the two earths should be identical, but it doesn't always work that way in practice. With telecomm's kit, different earth potentials or noisy earths can cause problems. Hence the question.

I did find a reference to Electro Magnetic Interference with different earthing systems, but it turns out that TT systems are less vulnerable. :oops:

Zen log al their customers and we've already explored that route. There was a pattern for a couple of days but that has now gone. Today and as I type this I have no idea if the line will be up or down.

Seriously starting to get pissed off with Openreach now.

It may not be Openreach at fault. If it is REIN, something is inducing errors into their cable pair. It could be something in your house, but I assume that you've already checked out the usual suspects.

Does your supply arrive via joint user poles? If so, any spikes in the mains will be induced into the adjacent telephone pair, to some degree. The spikes could be from anything anyone has connected to the mains. Do you use a filter on the power supplies for your kit?

If you could identify the cause as a particular appliance owned by someone else, there is little that you can do to get them stop using it, other than a polite request. As far as I know OR don't guarantee anything other than speech, which doesn't seem unreasonable given that they use a local network designed in the 1920's and 1930's. Your power provider can't be held responsible if some local farmer has faulty three phase motors that dim the lights when they start up.

I know from my own experience that it's frustrating, but intermittent faults like this often take a long time to diagnose.

Hi Dave and many thanks for your continued interest in this never-ending saga!

I am pretty sure that it is Openreach since many neighbours are having similar problems and off the same cabinet. The nearest neighbour is with pop telecomm but his responses in email are very difficult to interpret because he uses voice-recognition software when dictating emails!

I have no idea what this sentence means, for example. Google yields nothing on CLM.

One of my distant neighbours got nowhere with regular support and sent a letter to next level up, but they claim never have to receive the registered post letter;then again by special delivery, but still no action so far.

In my case after my complaint to pop Telecom, together with a history, a senior BT engineer rang me to make an appointment to come round for Wednesday when we get back from our short trip. This was confirmed by pop Telecom. But an hour later I got rung up by an Indian gentleman who appeared to be a BT engineer, and checking on my computer usage, which for the machine I'm using protest is actually quite low. He rang to say that they had found a fault on my line due to a faulty CLM whatever that is. And cancelled the appointment. I have been given an ID and pin number, but no way of knowing what to do with it. Can't bring them up . They were going to do test over the last 24 hours. Now well over that time, my speed is no better still going up and down just as before. At maximum 2.4 Mb per second and often less than 500 kb per second.

And now, of course, nobody is coming. Will have to start all over again when we get back. Pop Telecom had no idea what was going on and said they would look into it, so far, nothing. I now gather some people can get up to 12 Mb per second. Certainly not me.
 
As we'd been away for a couple of days, when I got back I checked to see how long out connection had been up and it looked as if it had been up all the time that we were away. So I called Zen to see what errors there were (of a sort insufficient to make the line drop) and was told zero which is great news. So maybe this 'CLM' thingummyjig has fixed my problem.

EDIT: cracked it. He meant ELN ...which his voice recognition software confused to CLM...I do wish he'd proof-read! ELN is BT Openreach code for Frame hardware which kind of makes sense.
 
Dave, been mulling over the problems my near-neighbour has been having and your comment regarding different earths sprang to mind. He has a very large solar panel array (16kW IIRC) and I was wondering if interference from that or differential earth potentials might give cause to his variable line rate as the sunlight comes and goes ?

Of course, it could still be the verdigris connections in the cabinet.

If Zen say your circuit is no longer dropping out, give it a week or two to confirm it. If it was an equipment fault affecting multiple circuits, it may have solved your neighbour's problem. Ask him to check after a few days.

I don't know much about solar panels, so perhaps Bob will have a look at this. As far as I know, the panels produce low voltage DC which is converted to AC and then put through a transformer to bring it up to mains voltage. Once at mains voltage the customer uses what he wants and sells the rest to the supplier.

If there is a sudden spike when the kit switches from 'sell' mode to 'use' mode, that could cause a drop out.

Did this problem arise before the solar panels were installed? Ask your neighbour to see if his problems are synchronised with switching of his solar energy. If so, switch it off and see if the faults disappear.

If the solar panel circuitry has an earth bonded to the building's primary earth, they will be at the same potential. Problems can arise with telecomm's kit when different bits of kit are earthed at different potentials.

The problem with faults like these is that the cause could be anywhere. Careful observation and recording is your best bet to form a diagnosis.

Keep an eye on it.

Solar panels systems are very heavily regulated. In order to claim UK FIT, every system component must be MCS approved. I think my MCS certificate actually lists the approval number against each major part.
Inverters have to meet quite stringent limits of harmonic and non harmonic noise injected onto the grid.

There is no concept of an inverter switching between driving the grid or driving domestic consumption it is a continuous smooth process brought about by simple current summation. If the inverter is not producing enough for the house load then the balance comes from the grid, if the inverter is producing more than the house load, then the excess goes into the grid.

A domestic system is normally limited to 16amps maximum output which is a tad under 4kW and about 16 "normal" (235w) panels. The power distribution people have to approve larger installations and sometimes force the applicant to pay for network upgrades.

If Roger's neighbour has 16kw of PV then the distribution boys will have been all over the system like a rash applying their own approvals as well so I think it is pretty unlikely to be a significant source of noise but I could be wrong......

The handover letter that I had following the installation of my 16 panel array states that it has been carried out in accordance with 'MIS3002 and MCS 001'.

Thans, chaps. His sporadic and variable broadband speed also occurs at night, he tells me and so the thought re the PV panels is null and void, TBH, the more I find out the more cr*p I find he has connected/around the place. He might be a bright bunny but when it comes to logically sorting these things out, I think that that all comes to nowt.

Sorry for the late reply...done a bit of driving recently....Thurs to Cornwall Sat > home v v late, Mon to Northumberland...jeez, that journey up the M6 was a bitch ...5 hours in the car, just got back (Tue evening) ...just over 1000 miles...and tomorrow off to the SE for me Mum's for her 92nd birthday.

Your post on Mike's thread about UPS kit prompted this post. Do you have a UPS serving your router?

I suffered from regular short disconnections in Devon. I was told that they were usually due to bird strikes on the HV network on the moors. The problem in my case was that after the router re-booted, it went through the ten day process of settling on an acceptable rate. In practice it meant that the circuit was usually running below maximum.

If you don't have one, it's worth considering.

Yes, it's on a UPS. Seems to have settled down a little better, thanks. I'm now able to Telnet into my Draytek router and get the error types and volumes..
 
Grrrr....having been stable for a while, this lunchtime it went pear-shaped. Tried several routers, managed to get one to stay connected/actually connect. Then it died. Then it came back. Eventually it seemed to settle down but a quick call to Zen told me that the Error Seconds were increasing at a great rate of knots...never a good thing....so we decided to re-open the fault and rebook an Openreach engineer with some 'dates not to book' in the calendar.

The consensus being that when the line is dodgy then some routers handle things better..moral..keep trying different routers. You might get lucky.

Then it went down again and seemed to stay down. Spoke to Zen again and said get the engineer here ASAP.

Then it came back up again. And seemed to stay up. And stay up. So rang Zen and asked what the Error Seconds were doing. Answer...there were none. So I went back to the router that I had plugged in to start with (the one I can look at the stats myself but at lunchtime but once the line started playing up refused to connect) and, guess what, that router also connected quite happily.

So cancelled the engineer (£140 + VAT) if no fault found. Doncha just love intermittent faults.

Seriously considering wrapping a steel hawser around that corroded cabinet, tying it to the Discovery tow-bar, sticking the transfer box in Low Gear and dragging the bloody thing down the road.

I understand your frustration. There's not much that's more difficult to locate than an intermittent fault. Multiple intermittent faults spring to mind :D

I wouldn't think that the connections in the cabinet would be the cause, since you have had an exchange side pair change and the OR tech. would have automatically changed the crimps.

Your UPS would have a smoothed output, but it wouldn't hurt to stick a 'plug in' mains filter on the output, just in case it's faulty.

It's annoying to have to do all this stuff when it might still end up as OR's problem, but you have the bill hanging over you, if OR don't find a fault.

If the problem persists, I'd start from scratch and document everything, together with the stat's from your router.

Stick with it.

Thanks for the input, deejay. For quite a while I've not been using the UPS to power the router.

This line is a real conundrum. One thing is for sure is that there is an underlying problem with the line and/or exchange equipment but that it is intermittent.

I am also seeing some anomalies depending on which router is connected but I have a theory about this that I'd welcome your and your teams' input on.

My understanding with ADSL is that the line is adaptive. From the initial connection - assuming a new line and router combination - everything is throttled right back to get a connection working. Once the line has connected then over time, various parameters are tweaked between the router and the line equipment to get the best possible speed with the minimum number of errors. It is a balancing act.

Now, the impression I have (and it is nothing more than an impression and based on what I have seen) is that once the line has gone pear-shaped then whatever base settings are set for the initial connection (but note - base settings within the parameters of whatever else is going on the line to the detriment of a stable connection) then the Draytek Vigor 2820n struggles to connect. It won't even sync. Plug in the Netgear 6000 and it will sync up and connect. Having said that, I did that yesterday while talking to one of the Zen engineers and although it connected OK, he could see the error seconds leaping up. Which suggests to me that the Draytek is fine...just that it's not happy with whatever noise or malfunction there is on the line when it is trying to sync up initially after the line has gone down. Does that make sense ?

Once the Netgear has been connected for a while then the line will have reached a different set of parameters (balancing speed/noise/reliability as I said before) but this time if I connect the Draytek then it will sync up and connect OK and be very stable. Until the line goes pear-shaped again. For example, yesterday afternoon I put the Draytek back on (after the Netgear had been on for some time), it worked fine, error seconds were low and stayed low. Interleave was 1250. Performed perfectly OK through the evening and night. In the morning I saw that the interleave was different (2500? IIRC) and the error seconds still in the tens. But as this morning progressed, the error seconds were starting to increase each time I ran "adsl status more".

Then we had a pretty intense thunderstorm, lost power a couple of times, and the line went down and refused to connect. Even putting the Netgear 6000 back on, it still stayed down. Then eventually it came back up using the Netgear (I am guessing that maybe there was a temporary fault at the exchange that got fixed or reset). Left it running for a while. Replaced with the Draytek but no cigar. So I'm back using the Netgear and later on this evening (and assuming that the line doesn't drop again) then I will try the Draytek back on. Reason why I like the Draytek is that I can see the stats. Can't do that with the Netgear 6000.

Does the above make any kind of sense ?

I'm getting close to the thin ice here. I always worked on 'proper' transmission sytems and what I've picked up about ASDL has been while trying to get mine working at a reasonable speed when I was in Devon.

Put in your phone number and postcode and you will get informaton about what is available on your exchange. You also get a straight line distance between you and the exchange. Add a third to this and you'll get a rough estimate of the cable length. The systems and suppliers available will also be there.

Firstly, do you know which ADSL system you are on? ADSL (as opposed to ADSL "n") as you rightly say, used a rate adaptation system, which could take up to ten days to settle.

AFAIK ADSL2 and ADSL2 + just synch up and run. They are better suited to short lines. There is a graph here (scroll down a bit) ...

showing the relationships between distance and speed. If you are more than about 4 Km from the exchange, the speed you get will be similar on any of the three systems. Four Km equates to about 4 Mb/s

I don't know what 'modem code' means to Draytek but Zen will probably help. I don't undertand why the Draytek router will not synch, albeit intermittently. Could it be that the exchange kit is trying to sync at ADSL2+ rates (up to 24 Mbit/S) and your line losses are preventing it?

Is the netgear router set up for ADSL2, (up to 5 or 12 Mb/S) so it will sync, but throws lots of errors?

Have you checked that the routers have the latest firmware?

As I say, I'm not an expert and I may be barking up the wrong tree, but the people at Zen will know.

That's really helpful thanks. I'd not realised about different modem codes and so I can check. At the moment (this morning) Zen say that the line has been pretty good (Netgear 6000).

I haven't read all of this .. too many words ! lol , but we are on the outskirts of BB range.
We had rubbish service, until we upgraded to fibre at the nearest "green box". It's been quite acceptable since then

when we were with BT .. it would be off for 3-4 days a month ! (they wanted us to plug into the main socket every time ! lol)

we moved to plusnet, and it still went off, but only for an hour most at a time
(Same company - different support! )

since moving to fibre, we have to reset maybe once a month, but all good apart from that.
 
That link to different modem firmware versions was brilliant, thanks, Deejay. The good news is that I found several different versions to try...Draytek suggest three versions dependent on the ADSL line in question.

The bad news is that none of them worked and I have a sneaking suspicion that the modem might have got hosed during the thunderstorm. It was the router that was connected to the line. The Netgear 6000 works fine as does the brand new Draytek that I'd bought.

Some people collect routers and others collect the other type of router :eusa-whistle: I see to be doing both at the moment!

Oh dear. If there are any signs of life on the modem, you could try resetting to factory defaults.

Oh, it all looks OK. I can telnet into it. I can browse to it. I may try a factory reset...you never know!
