Japanese tool box modelled along the one found in ‘Japanese Woodworking Tools’ by Toshio Odate. A traditional tool box doesn’t use any fancy joinery to hold it together; clenched nails are the preferred choice. This one uses stainless steel Torx screws which bite into 20mm cross-dowels. A ply base is fitted with pine end pieces biscuited in place to complete the appearance, though a re-sawn, stack laminated top has been used, which when re-glued provides a quarter sawn board. The lid is secured in place with a double dovetailed mahogany sliding wedge. Made for my son in London for his ever expanding range of handtools, the largest of which will be a Toolbox saw from Ax.
