• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

At this time of the year, I used to give the dustbin a splash of Jeyes to mask the smell , also I quite liked the smell of the Jeyes.
But they have changed the formula 😱 and it’s useless.
I suspect the old brown stuff is carcinogenic and could increase the risk of cancer if you bathed in it every day.
Does anyone know of something similar to the old stuff that might still be available to ā€œthe tradeā€.

Years ago we had to use hard toilet paper, every one signed by J Eyes.

Jetwash the bin after emptying? Then aldilidl lemon bleach (cheap and bleach is bleach whatever domestos say).

Our old sick cat took a liking to peeing on puppy pads instead of going outside. they made the bin smell. i bought some stuff called Bin Buddy from Amazon. It worked well. I expected to get through a lot of it so bought the 3 pack. turns out one pack lasted longer than the cat... which was actually quite a long time.

Fill washing up bowl with hot water, add dollop of Fairy, add whole thing to bin. Take floor mop, press hard into corners and across floor of bin, sliuice hot liquid liberally up sides and around bin mouth, using mop, empty, rinse with water, leave upside down to dry.

That was five years ago.

Since then, everything, but everything, in there has been plakky bagged. The bin has no odour problems.

Since when were bins meant to be clean ? They are for putting rubbish in. How did we get to thinking we need to have bins cleaned, moss removed from the roof and however many other utterly futile activities ?

My impetus Tony, is simply: if your bin stinks, that's because bacteria and fungi are at work. That's going to attract vermin, apart from also being a health risk.
I couldn't give a flying fornication about moss on roofs, save that it blocks the gutters and causes staining on house fronts.

I’m quite content with the fact that my bin cleaning isn’t up to standard, but no one has replied to my original question šŸ¤”

I wonder when they changed it. maybe try one of the cheaper shops that sell older stock. They were the last to sell andrews when that was discontinued. Maybe try facebook marketplace, theirs a guy near me selling 5l of what looks like an old tin.

I suggested Bin Buddy as it removes the bad smell and leaves a scented bin. No cleaning required. Our wheelie bin doesn't get cleaned and doesn't smell.

I think Jeyes changed quite some time ago. I have an old tin of it I found in the garage when we moved in 20+ years ago. It seems to take very little of it to clear the algae from our conservatory roof, which is all I use it for.

The old stuff is some sort of phenolic coal tar derivative. I imagine it isn't great for you, but the ultimate issue is probably that there are not the coke ovens to produce it anymore ? The new stuff is quite different, and relatively ineffective. What about other disinfectants ? Dettol ?

I think I've hosed out our wheelie bin once in that 20+ years, but we have separate food waste collection, and no pet or infant waste going in there which helps.

Jim, have a word with Kibworth Hardware, he's an old stock reseller of many a cleared out Hardware shop.
Cheers, Andy

Everything going into our wheely bin is in a large black bag, nothing loose or messy.
The bins are emptied every Friday morning and every second Friday the get cleaned and sanitised.
The cost is built into our Estate levies. It is about ZAR50.00 per bin empty and same for cleaning per unit per month. Very cheap.

Apologies Lurker, does not answer the question. I will see if I can find out what chemicals they use.
