They seem to be for doing really big cuts!

Do they actually work at all or are they another oversized display model to attract the attention of any passing dressmaker or tailor, even if they're a bit shortsighted?

Definitely left-handed, but I can't work out the purpose of that bit where they touch together at the handle end. It looks like it has some sort of indexing line on it (might be just a reflection).

Are they for ribbon-cutting ceremonies? Beautiful things, for certain.

Aside: As a profound leftie, I have three 'cooking' pairs (not as nice as those!), which I really didn't need to label, as oddly none of the children ever wanted to borrow them.

Interestingly, you can get two types - either pivoted as right handed ones, or a complete mirror of right handers' ones. I have one of each, which is rather useful. The third pair are much smaller and the only ones which are comfortable in the right hand.

My bigger ones are Fiskars and the little ones Victorinox.

The DW who was a seamstress for over fifty years, has used scissors that large they are designed for cutting mainly straight edges in pattens, she is a south paw as well, that used to piss off the bosses has they had to get lefthanded pairs for her and they were more expensive, but none was as polished as these so probably as said ceremonial use.
