Gents, Is it me?

I just don't seem to get on with my keyless chuck on my Ax Trade Pillar Drill.

It could be my arthritis has weakened my grip. And changing from one size drill to another, up or down, just doesn't seem as easy as it used to be with a key. It all just seems to be a faff. And the times a drill or bit has fallen out of the chuck while I'm trying to tighten it!

Should I go to APT and buy a keyed chuck? Mission Control and I could have lunch in Lyme Regis.

Agreed, first thing I did when I bought by chiwanese bench drill. One day I will replace the chucks on my cordless drills too.

I’ve got four keyless chucks and three of them are fine. One of the Chinese ones could be better but it works ok. My best one is a 3-16mm Albrecht and it’s very good. I’ve had it at least 17 years and it came with a mill likely made in the 1960’s so it’s quite old. I got the mill from an engineering company so It was likely used every day. I kept the chuck when I sold the mill as I knew it was well made. If you’re going to get a keyed chuck I’d seriously think about getting a decent one like a Jacobs.

I had a huge argument with Milwaukee when my keyless chuck failed after only a few months use. They are excluded from any warranty....surprise...surprise. Eventually they did send mea replacement FOC but that is now failing.

The Keyless 2MT Albrecht is £223 from Knighton Tools and the keyed Jacobs from Chronos is £22.

That's 10 times dearer!!

As a hobby woodworker I might be tempted with the cheaper one.

Have you got a link for that, a 13mm Jacobs chuck is normally at least £50.00.

Just had another look now you've prompted me. It's the way the website is set up; it's 'Jacobs and other chucks'.

Never had a problem with the keyless chucks I own but I’m afraid it all boils down to quality, having once owned an Axminster pillar drill it doesn’t surprise me your chuck is carp it was the second worse piece of machinery I’ve ever bought, though their mortiser beat it by a long way. :shock:

I can’t remember the model now Rog I think I must have blocked it from my memory :lol: it was a good few years ago supposedly when their quality was better :shock: I bought it at one of their shows which goes to show how long ago it was :?

It will probably fail now but the keyless chuck on my Axminster ED16B pillar drill has been fine since purchase in 2007. Stays done up with only moderate hand tightening.

I’ve only had a quick look but if it’s an Axminster Trade drill it’s likely fitted with a 16mm chuck? Axminster don’t appear to sell a keyed chuck that big. A 16mm keyed Jacobs chuck seems to be about £70 which isn’t too bad. You obviously need to identify the fitting before you order anything. Most drills have a Jacobs taper on the spindle but it could also be a “B” taper. My Progress No 1 bench drill has a Jacobs taper on the outside of the spindle but also accepts MT1 drill bits up the middle if you remove the chuck. Good luck.

I have a similar problem with a small mains drill which lives in an old Bosch DIY pillar drill stand.

I use a pair of slip joint pliers to grip the one part and tighten the other part by hand

Worth a try, at least until the chuck fails

In that case you still have a choice as the arbor is a separate component. I notice Axminster don’t say what taper your chuck has, although it does for one of the larger machines - MT3/B16.

As mentioned earlier I have four keyless chucks for my lathe and mill. They have 2 or 3 Morse taper arbors fitted but the chucks themselves have JT3 or B16 tapers apart from a small Rohm chuck which is threaded.

The 16mm Jacobs chuck on the Chronos site has a JT3 taper so if you bought that you’d need to get a MT2/JT3 arbor unless you plan to use your old arbor and it just happens to be a JT3.

The cheap chuck on the Chronos site has a JT6 taper but comes supplied with a MT2/JT6 arbor.
