• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

This is one of those projects designed, to use the term loosely, on the back of an envelope and developed as it progressed.
My granddaughter is an enthusiastic Harry Potter fan so I decided to make her a standard wand, then a pen to go with it followed by a box to put it in, I haven't yet decided how on earth I'm going to make it cast real spells though. :?

The wand and pen ae out of walnut and ash with a crystal and bead pinched from my daughter, the box is approx 480 x 100 x 70 mm made from mahogany of some kind. continuing the mitred corners through the lid was deliberate but likely a mistake as it has sharpish corners and I inserted a magnet to keep the lid closed.

The wood burning was a first for me although I bought the machine from a boot sale 30 years ago I've never used it.

She's going to be so pleased with that. Well done. Looks professional indeed.

:eusa-clap: Great work Lons. That pic of Harry on his broom is great!
You should do more 'drawing' you have the knack mate.

Unfortunately not Chris, I shamelessly copied the characters with maybe a little artistic licence. :eusa-whistle:

Artistic license is the best kind of license!

Lovely Box Bob, they'll love it!

Very nice :)

I can think of someone that would love that too.

Who's the favourite grandad now! Super all round.

Beautiful, Bob :eusa-clap:

She'll be dead chuffed.

That's a nice HP wand and box Bob. An extra mince pie at Christmas I reckon, but it were me I'd rather have a wee dram of the malt :D Or preferably both, at the same time  - Rob

excellent work, when I see stuff like this I really wish I had a little lathe set up.

might buy the lidl one.*

seriously, really good looking bit of work that, reckon the pen will still be in use for many years to come.

* ducks and covers before the tirade. :)

Just seen this, lovely work Bob and I’ll bet the recipient was suitably pleased.

Lovely looking wand, my daughter just looked over my shoulder and saw it, asked who did it and how. I explained you’d used the a lathe and she said “Have you got one of those dad?” Yep. “Can I make one?” Yep!

Got to clean up the rust on the bed from storage now then teach a 12 year old how to turn!! Given I’m bang average at it myself this will be fun! Glad she wants to have a go though.

I thought you had to be under 16 to enter that? ;) :D

Under 18. I was 17 at the time.

I also won a comp at Barnsley Civic Theatre. You had to under 21 and it was the day before my 21st birthday!

sorry for the cheek Steve, sometimes it's hard to resist. :)

Steve's new table saw jig.

Did you know that it is 100 years this week since P T Selbit performed that trick for the first time? He had an ambulance outside the theatre "just in case" and he had assistants pouring fake blood down the drains while people were queueing to get in. Excellent promotoion.

PS I bet that lass's back is killing her.

Bob that wand set is beautiful, I bet your granddaughter loves it - I know that my 10year old Harry Potter loving daughter would certainly love to be given a handmade gift like that from her Grandad!

You'll really enjoy that Mark a bit of offspring bonding is always good. My granddaughter is 7 and has shown an interest in the past but with the current lockdown we daren't see her so no chance of having a go. My daughter in law is a front line senior nurse and granddaughter still attending school so we can't risk it as my missus has Parkinsons and a couple of other issues.

If you can get your daughter to make a simple pen she'll be hooked and if she gets half decent will soon be selling them to her school mates and teachers, you'll be able to put your feet up and retire.

If she fancies it drop me a message and I'll post you a simple slimline kit.

Yeah they both do like doing a bit in the workshop so now I’ve got the flooding issue under control I’ll concentrate on clearing the workshop into a usable state so we can get cracking.

That’s a very kind offer re the pen kit, I’ll come back to you if/when we get to that point. Thanks.

Thought id add my less than impressive attempt made a few years ago when thing no. 1 had to go to school as a Harold pothead character.

Bear in mind i dont have a lathe here and Definately dont have a wood lathe.

That'll need to be 2 pen kits or, from experience, you'll have problems. Just let me know if and when.

Well it kept him quiet for a bit which is Definately some sort of magic so i guess it must. :D
