• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone got one of these squares?
I’m thinking of treating myself, even though I have sufficient similar ones.

I can highly recommend them, I have the rosewood trial 1 mortise gauge and have used it a hell of a lot, it is an heirloom quality tool.

Is it just me that is surprised by the name Trial for a finished high end product?
I do not doubt their quality and I dare say the marketing and advertising experts know what they are doing but to me trial means:-

a person, experience, or situation that tests a person's endurance or forbearance.
Or
a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something.
Or
a formal examination of evidence by a judge, typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case

Of course my mastery and understand of english often leaves a lot to be desired.

In some parts they are known as a "try square" Andy. As in try it to see if it is square. I thought it was a Midlands thing but was common use. I've always called them set squares or try squares interchangeably.

£££Ouch! Don't get me wrong, I've got some nice squares..... rosewood handles, Marples, Rabone Chesterman, Moore & Wright etc but they are all either old ones included in my apprenticeship starter tool kit years ago or picked up second hand over time. My experience is a bit mixed with some good makes and there have been times when I've had to use a careful file to correct.
