• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. As a few people have Mavericks I thought I'd start a separate thread rather than hijack anymore. I'll try and move the posts out of the other thread and put them here.


It's that bloody Mavericks. My keyboard/typing gets ahead of itself and so some errors creep in. In Snow Leopard that wasn't a problem as anything misspelt was underlined in red. Bloody Mavericks has a feature that it offers up what it thinks you want typed and if you don't spot it then it gets inserted and there is no red underlining to flag it up. I must find out where to switch it off.
 
Really Roger? Mine works just as it used to. Spelling errors underlined in red and grammar errors underlined in green.
In preferences under Keyboard > Text > Correct spelling automatically.

Yup...just found it thanks..

Have you discovered all the extra options if you press the Option key while mousing over menu items in many programs?
 
You still type the words in, I just speak to the computer and it writes it for me, much less hassle and no chance of spelling mistakes plus it's a lot quicker than I can type.
The only drawback is that good lady wife still insists on asking who I'm talking to.

Well, Safari, for example. The older version used to have separate menu entries for Mail Link and Mail Page. Now all you see is Mail Page but if you select Option while scrolling down the menu list, you wills ee that Mail Link is there.

In Preview, Save As has disappeared from the pull-down menu unless you hit Option.

Tried it. The user interface is even more un-contrasty and flat and useless! I struggle with Mavericks to see which Programs are currently loaded as the reflections in the dock icons are the same colour, intensity as the tiny mini-icons that pop up when a program is running.

The lack of contrast in the back arrow, for example, in Safari is also confusing.

But the main thing is that my version of iPhoto won't run and I don't want to waste £10+ buying the latest version. There is no 'compelling reason' to use Yosemite for me.
 
Which version of iPhoto will not run on Yosemite.

I have not updated yet as I have only had Mavericks for a couple of weeks
 
Interesting Roger. I mentioned your woes to our apple guy in work and he reckons he upgraded to Yosemite without issue, didn't need to upgrade any app or anything...

Haven't confirmed his iPhoto version though...

iPhoto. Or is it that you just don't want to pay to upgrade to it?

Must admit I thought the core apps were free across the suite, but I've never looked into it.

If Yosemite offered 'must-have' functions then I wouldn't mind paying the £10. But it doesn't and so being the tight sod that I am..£10 = 3 pints !!
 
Are Apple losing the plot?

Years ago when I was using Macs at work, the strong point was that everything just worked first time.
Models like Macplus, SE30, LC series etc
If you wanted to write code to sell for Macs it had to be tested on every Mac model before Apple would let you sell it as mac compatible. It was a PITA but is did mean that there were no compatibility issues

The down side was that many custom software suppliers would not play ball as so we as a company were forced into the PC route to get the packages we needed.
PC became the machine of choice for technical work and Macs were almost exclusively used for graphics where they excelled.

Now it seems apple must have lowered their standards and let in all the compatibility issues.

Not so much compatibility issues as after a certain time, you simply can't have backwards compatibility. Where they ARE losing the plot is in the downgrade of their usability which was always one of their strengths. They seem to be making changes to the user interface that are, judging by the vitriol posted on some of the forums, designed to remove functions and options previously present in earlier versions OR to make them hidden or not obvious viz having to press the option key. Removal of sidebars ...generally a reduction in functionality which a lot of people don't like.

There seems to be a lemming-like rush to go down the Microsoft route of making the user interface more and more like a smartphone. Which is dumb.
 
I don't think it's that Bob, these are still apple apps we're talking about.

I think part of the issue is that they have decided that they are unifying the iOS look and feel across all platforms, hence why there's a completely new version of iPhoto. The old versions are still generally backwards compatible but some things they have rebuilt from the ground up.

As I say, with the new version of iPhoto my mate went from Mountain Lion to Mavericks to Yosemite without a single compatibility issue.

Back to Roger though, short of paying the £10 for the newer iPhoto is that the only thing stopping you? Not because of losing some functionality?

Grrrr.....in Snow Leopard I used the Calendar to remind me when credit card payment dates were due and had a reminder set to pop up on the screen.

Migrate to Mavericks....what's all this Notification crap? I don't want all this junk keep popping up. Ah, Do Not Disturb...excellent.

Didn't realise that they took the reminders OUT of Calendar and stuck them in bloody Notifications.

Nett result..one missed payment.
 
I've been using a widget, iCal events. Regrettably it is no longer supported but it does work and makes up to a weeks worth of future events constantly visible.

I find it very useful.
 
Make minimum payments by Direct Debit and then pay the rest off whenever - never miss a payment that way.

I use the calendar on my iPhone which sends out reminders, probably links with my MacBook but I rarely use that now?

I must admit that after years of scepticism over Direct Debits, I now use them for nearly all bills.
Pension turns up on the 1st of each month and in the next two or three days all DD are collected and by about the 5th of the month, I know what is left and available to spend. Most expenditure is on credit card - I hardly ever use cash - and 'spare' funds in the bank account is there ready to pay the CC bill the following month.

Yup..we pay the credit card bill off each month. Trouble is that between us we get our income at varying points in the month. So sometimes have to shuffle things around as it is pointless keeping any spare (spare...wozzat?) cash in the bank. Oh, to have a salary again.
