• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi Andy, we are a far-flung bunch aren’t we! Up to you which one you use.
I live at LN7 6.. but my workshop is at DN31 3.. different postal districts but actually only 15 minutes apart. Cheers Ian

Clogs, you say what a small world we live in, not so sure, I think you’re more likely to get people dropping in for a cup of tea then poor old Nelsun – crikey that’s a bit remote, don’t suppose there are many trees are there? Take my hat off to you Nelsun I’m not sure I could do it. You must have to be very organised and have lots of supplies in for times when life gets a bit inaccessible! Ian

I had to Google where ZE2 was ! Few years back when I was on a windsurfing holiday in Greece, some guys had come down from the Shetland Islands. They kept referring to 'the mainland' when talking about home but a lot of what they said just didn't make sense. Turns out that their 'mainland' is one of the larger islands. :D They started travelling down early on Friday for the Sunday morning flight.
 
Yep, we have "the mainland" referring to the main body of Shetland, "Da Toon" referring to Lerwick (the capital) and "Sooth" for anywhere on the UK mainland.

The dialect is a mix of Scots and Norwegian but you can tell very much where someone comes from up here (to the village / island) by their accent. I do find broad Dorric (my mother tongue, as it were) harder to decipher most times which is a blessing!

Most UK post codes tend to use two prominent letters from from the town of the nearest major sorting office. Where on earth does ZE come from I wonder.

What sort of woodworking to you do? We enjoy photos around here and would welcome any of past or present projects or of your workshop.

And just to put some flesh on just how far away Shetland is, Haltwhistle a few miles away from me proudly boasts that it is the Centre of Britain. For those that don't know, Haltwhistle is up in Northumberland.

No worries at all Andy and thanks for putting me on the map.

I'm a keen hobbyist with about 7 years of wood butchery behind me. The dreaded YouTube to get me started (often in the wrong direction!) and, later, digesting as much as possible from a few forums. I mainly make furniture for the immediate and extended family out of what I can get hold of up here from a 10x4' shed; it's a tight fit and the house acts as a tool store for the more occasional (and rust prone) tools. Everything has to work together and justify its place for sure. I've made out kitchen units, beds and a door or two in there but that's about as big as I can go.

@Cabinetman - it is remote and there are very few trees which is a definite miss compared to the UK mainland. I wouldn't want to live in a city again for love nor money though as the remoteness and exposure to The Elements is something quite special. It's certainly not for everyone (people do come and go) but it fits for us. Shetland is a very independent place and oftentimes you'll hear folk talk about living in the Shetland Bubble. Being so far removed from everywhere else has its perks; you can happily ignore most of the nonsense going on elsewhere as Shetland carries on about its business.
