More ‘Marmite’ boxes

Another batch of boxes, all from slavaged wood.

Reaction has been mixed like the last box (hence marmite!).

Feels like an age ago Malcolm kindly gave me some coloured veneers and I’ve been determined to make something incorporating them. I really want to make similar boxes but with flowing curves. I have so far been beaten by the complexity of templates going around corners. The tinking continues.

In the meantime my fiddling discovered that the veneers were the same thickness as the kerf on my dovetail saw and a proof of concept (sounds posh!) was duly knocked up in some tatty old birch ply



It appeared to work so two boxes were prepared out of an old hi fi unit which to the best of my knowledge is one of the rosewoods (I know the provenance of the unit). Then I set to with the dovetail saw and hacked out some kerfs which were then filled with veneer.







While I was at it I threw this one together as well. Believe it’s honduran rosewood, from an old wardrobe.



And all together with a ruler for scale



Please don’t be worried about criticism, I don’t expect everyone to like them.

Yes very good, personally the internal colours are a little jarring, but I like the outside lines a lot.

Interesting idea has triggered an idea in my mind even though I'm not a decorative box maker.
A similar method could make a box look like it were tied with string maybe with an inlaid bow knot on the top or front face?

I love marmite and those boxes. How did you make the concave corners to fit those round corner posts.

Getting a veneer to fit a saw kerf is a great idea and if you have a method of cutting curves (band saw, jigsaw) and matching the kerf with a veneer all sorts of fun can be had with curved segmented forms.

A variation on the theme could be to band more than one veneer.
